im not a sanchez fan and think he's pretty much worthless. that said, geno smith is nowhere near ready to be an NFL starter right now and anyone that watched a significant amount of college football last season should know that

If that's the case then why are the coaches wasting precious snaps with the ones on him? I mean if he's not even close he surely won't be winning any competition so why not let the vet get the reps in the new o?

Care to explain? Id really like to hear why.

Id like to say I watch a good amount of college FB, and would like to hear why you think he isnt anywhere near being ready...?

Let me guess... "air-raid QB who played primarily from shotgun"? Right?

Considering this may be Rex's "make-or-break" year, if the qb competition is close, you hafta' to go with Sanchez on experience alone...however, his "leash" has GOTTA' be short! If he replicates any of his "fails" of the past 2 seasons during games 1,2 (or maybe 3), he MUST be pulled & G' put in!
Last season, Jet fandom got all hyped in Game 1 vs Buffalo where he threw 3 TD's with the Jets blowing out the Bills! It went all down-hill afterwards as Mark could NOT build or even maintain from that game's positives. IMHO, Sanchez MUST be efficient & intelligent with ea. game he starts/completes; any deviation or reversion to prev season(s) play & his "qb-card" must be permanently canceled for good!

If you remember that game started with a Sanchez one handed interception.

I agree, if it's close and Sanchez has the slight edge, no need to rush Geno. Start Sanchez, make sure one last time what he is capable of, then go forward. If SAnchez becomes a top 10 QB, great! life becomes easy. If Sanchez falters and makes poor decisions like last year, in goes Geno. The thing I am afraid with is that Sanchez is inconsistent again and ahs a great game, then a poor game, and on and off.

Ahhh man, you're so right!!! I recall my reaction to that 1st INT wanting to strangle Mark....but he righted his "mindset" & went on to tease the crap out of us with a nice game afterwards. What happened after I can NOT explain......

Mark to start this Fri's pre-season game vs the Lions....in my book he has absolutely no room for errors. Pre-season or not.....jus' sayin'!

Like I said before let's see how Sanchez performs in the preseason. He's been terrible in his last 2 preseasons. I take Sanchez TC performance with a grain of salt.

Just like you take his playoff performances?

    Come on.

Let it be a competition. Because just wearing your opinion on your sleeve like that is not something to be respected.

    What of Geno looks worse?

I really wouldn't be that disappointed if Mark shit the bed, because then we would have possibly a full season to understand Smith's ability... but if Sanchez wins out, then he wins out.

That's the competition that Idzik professed to bring when he was hired.

    Anything less is a fraud.

What's likely to happen is pretty simple. Mark Sanchez is going to play well this season or he's going to be replaced at some point, either before the season starts or at some point up to the bye.

The case where he plays the way he did in the first 4 seasons and somehow retains his job anyway is basically rooted in Geno Smith being so unready to play that the Jets can't put him on the field.

The primary reason that this is so is that the fans will not accept a mediocre inconsistent performance out of Sanchez again. The boos will be frequent if he is throwing picks at bad times and the Jets are losing games. That's something that no professional sports team can deal with. Pronounced negativity in the stands means the team is doing something wrong and they'll correct that sooner rather than later.

His playoff performances are overrated (not saying they were bad) but clinging on to a guy because of a couple playoff games and has since regressed is the recipe of a loser franchise.

If Geno looks worse then he has nowhere to go but up and he would have upside or potential to be better. If Sanchez wins the competition ill root for hm to succeed but I want Geno to win the job.

That's all might be true, but when did you see enough of his play? Training camp or that one game?

I've seen video of him in college, some training camp highlights, some NFL preseason and the 1 game in the regular season. More than enough to see what I needed to see.

This is just not smart. Let me give you this comparison.
You're a manager who over the last year was fucked numerous times by the same long-time employee. Projects not completed, objectives not achieved, you had numerous conversations with HR about your lack of management skills exemplified by your inability to manage this one long-term employee.
Finally, you are given one last chance: take this project and make sure it's on schedule and under budget. If not, you are shown the door.

Are you telling me that your best option in this case is to get Sanchez "on experience alone"? You know Sanchez will fuck you because he's done so in the past. Hell the very reason why you're given this last chance and the ultimatum is because of him. Why in the world would you go with the same guy?

First, don't think I'm trying to sell McE as the next best QB.
I don't think what you listed is enough to form the final judgement. College -- ancient history, players grow. Training -- Sanchez has always been a star of no-pressure so sure McE will look pale next to him. Preseason and 1 game -- too small of a sample.

My point is you can't make decisive conclusion and what you're making instead is a guess. A well-educated one, but still a guess.

Now playing the devils advocate.. would I like to see McElroy given another chance? In theory -- yes. In theory, I'd say "Mark is done, he is a know quantity and that that quantity is not to my standard of NFL QB". And so I'd've made Mark permanent bench & clipboard attachment and would give 70% 1st team snaps to Geno and remaining to McE -- just to really evaluate him and get an answer.

Is this gonna happen in nowadays Jets' reality? -- no way. I would not waste 1st team snaps on McElroy when appearantely I still have Sanchez to check out.

I dont buy into these spread system QBs...they catch lightening in a bottle sometimes like Kaepernick or RG3 or Cam, but then they almost always get hurt or defenses figure them out and they arent effective. Sanchez may not be the answer but it sure as hell isnt Geno Smith, who didnt even play that well the last half of the college football season against swiss cheese big XII defenses. when we drafted this bum i broke my remote, and i'll break another when we inevitably take a chance on Manziel next draft. there's a reason Geno fell as far as he did in the draft, and its because hes not an NFL qb. too bad the other 31 GMs knew that but Idzik missed the memo
