Because the majority of people are beginning to understand the logic that went into drafting him a few months ago by now?
The Jets do not have to name a starter early. They can just keep doing what they are doing and rotating the QB's with the 1st team while favoring Geno some in the overall number of snaps. It will become obvious at some point that Sanchez has lost the battle in that situation but there's no upside to just handing the job to Geno earlier than they have too. Competitive pressure brings out the best in most people and if it doesn't do that in the case of Geno Smith then that's telling the Jets something they need to know. I'm guessing they name the starter after the 3rd pre-season game. Maybe even waiting until after the 4th if both QB's are playing well.
I picked Nacho. Sanchez needs to start. If for no other reason, I don't want the Jets org fucking up another good QB by throwing him into the fire without the proper protection (gel'ed OLine), a sub par WR/TE core, and a bunch of unknowns for RBs. I'd rather see Nacho struggle and go 8-8 this season and start Geno next year, after a year of clip board holding. This gets the new OLine together, The D mold w/o vets up front and no Revis, the offensive system in place, a chance to get better/younger at multiple offensive positions, and free's up money to possibly pick up a big time FA for a skill position. In my opinion, starting Geno now is akin to starting Snatchez in '09. Its going to fuck him up whether 7's skill set is better or not.
See, as a fan, I would see that Sanchez went 8-8 this year with a new system, lack of talent, and should take another step in 2014.
But you don't even know if he'll take a step forward. In his case from where he was last year, he's going to have to take multiple steps forward to even be competent. He's being outplayed by a rookie who is new to the WCO and wasn't the most polished from under center. Shouldn't that tell you all you need to know about Sanchezs ability (or inability) to take his play to the next level?
The Jets history with QB's is too messed up for them not to get a good long look at Geno Smith at some point this year. The only exception that I can see is if Sanchez is just playing so well that he gives the Jets no other choice than to play him, which clearly is not the case now. One of the worse scenarios around the QB position right now is that Geno Smith can't convince the Jets he's ready to be on the field. Sanchez plays the season, poorly as usual, and the Jets are stuck with a top 10 pick in next year's draft and no way of determining if Geno is actually going to be the franchise QB for them. One possible triage in that situation is to pick a QB in the first two rounds next year, cut Sanchez - which is likely to happen anyway, and then have the new QB plus Geno Smith duke it out to be the starting QB. That's a really poor waste of resources for a rebuilding team unless the QB position is really shaky at that point. The other likely triage is to just go with Geno Smith and draft playmakers around him and hope he is the real deal without much on-field data to support the decision. The much better scenario is the Jets have made a determination by the draft next year as to whether or not Geno is the real deal and they can either focus on drafting a QB with Geno in the mix as depth and the likely backup or they can look to surround him with talent and make their good bet on him, based on what they have seen on the field, pay off.
The Jets had a solid, veteran team on 2009, so this season is really not comparable to the 2009 team. Sanchez sucks because Sanchez sucks. He is who he is. He's never been consistent and he'll probably never be better than a mediocre NFL QB. I predict that at some point either this season or next season he becomes a career backup QB. That's not a bad situation to be in if you're wise with how you spend your money.
Sanchez already has enough money to live well for the rest of his life. The pay of a backup QB isn't going to be all that important in the scheme of things. The question is whether he still believes he can be a good QB or not. I'd predict that he might retire and go on to do other things after the Jets. He's basically going to be in David Carr territory at that point and the question is whether his life is completely centered on football or whether he thinks he has another career likely to work. A big part of being happy in life is not to do a sucky job that leaves you feeling bad about yourself. Right now the job Mark Sanchez does at QB has to leave him unhappy when he thinks about it. Being a backup isn't going to change that. FWIW all the people criticizing Sanchez for coming out in 2009 are nuts. He benefited from that decision in an enormous way that likely wouldn't have happened if he made any other decision. Look at Matt Barkley, who would have made much more money coming out in 2012 than he did going back to USC.
This...I for the life of me can't understand how our QB "Competition" is not a three way run. I can understand not including Simms but I do not know why McElroy isn't in the discussion. The Green and White game should give some indication. I REALLY want this guy to get some pre-season work and I HOPE he lights it up. I would rather McElroy start and let Geno get some bench reps than to pull a "NY Jet" and throw Geno out there and get him ruined before he's ready. If anyone who asks Rex questions reads this I'd like to know the answer. A REAL answer....
I'm with you on this. If this is truly a "competition" then it make sense to see what McElroy's got. His performance during the Green & White scrimmage merits at least some time with the 1's against the Lions. It'll be interesting to see if Idzik and Ryan do their due diligence and give the kid a shot.
I don't know the answer to that question, but I do know that McElroy was terrible in the one game that he started last season.
No argument about the team being better in 09 but you are still taking about having a rookie start, in NYC metro, into our fan base, into a media firestorm (which I am sure he realizes by now sucks hairy monkey balls), and whether the team is good or not -> is rookie suicide. Aaron Rodgers sat for 4 years behind Favre in Green Bay. I think there are 4 beat writers in ALL of Wisconsin, with a super-supportive fan base, in a slower environment and more gentle atmosphere. Sitting Geno for a year isn't a bad thing considering what playing in NYC, especially the Jets, brings...
http://www.newyorkjets.com/team/depth-chart.html The Jets posted their 1st depth chart. Is Mark Sanchez #1, yes. Is Geno Smith #1, yes. Mark Sanchez/Geno Smith #1 QB on the depth chart
You are right...McElroy did have a bad game...partially because he spent the game getting HAMMERED. The Jets, by that point in my opinion, had mailed it in. How many sacks did McElroy get? No sir, if this is an "open" competition then every QB with experience should get a fair shot. Period. That was the way it was in any program I had ever been a part of.
At this point I think it has been established that the bout is between Smith and Sanchez and that G-mac and Simms aren't considered for the starting job. The point where it was open has passed. they're comfortable with these two getting all of the first team reps and don't want somebody else taking those extra reps away. they need them for Smith and Sanchez to get a better evaluation of them. call it unfair but I think thats the score. McElroy's scrimmage performance doesn't mean much beyond helping him cement his place as 3rd string QB, I mean sure he scored but it was against a third string defense right?
That's because the line had mark's back still and let the defense crush him numerous times in that game. Piss poor blocking for McElroy when he got his shot.
He must have missed Sanchez being harassed in the Arizona game. The picks were bad, but he took three sacks, amd was hounded incessantly. The line played better when El Nacho Loco got yanked. And not a little. MARKedly better.
