I'd probably do it, although Portis' 17M signing bonus may prevent the skins from trading him.

Hi everyone. Im a skins fan and there is a rumor going around a couple skins forums. Apparently someone claims to have talked to George Michael who is this irritating reporter who works for the redskins. He said that several teams, include the Jets, have approached the skins regarding a trade for Ladell Betts. The alleged trade goes like this:

Skins trade Betts and our #6 overall pick to the Jets for Vilma and your #25 pick. We are all debating the merits of this trade (if there is any validity to the rumor). How would you all, as Jets fans, feel about this trade?

Are there other "fair" trades you would be interested in? Given our teams' track records, i think its safe to assume we will engage in some sort of offseason trade with eachother.

Now that would be something. I'd have to say I think you're guaranteed to have Jamaal Anderson or Gaines Adams on the board and Betts...I think I probably pull the trigger.

I'm not so sure about Portis as others seem to be. He is damn good when he's healthy, but you can't count on that. Plus, being a smaller than usual back, and considering the workload he's had to carry I don't think his shelf life as a RB is going to be that long.

If Vilma was being traded for a RB, it'd have to be a fresh legged young guy. The shelf life on top RBs in this league just isn't long enough for my taste.

Think about it this way, I'd actually rather do Turner + second/third for Vilma than for Portis straight up. Why? Turner offers sick upside, and even though he's 25 (only a year younger than Portis) as far as being a RB...that year is huge. Turner is a far younger 25 than Portis was at 25 in terms of being a RB. Fresher legs, better size, and of course the physical tools are there.

as a skins fan, I feel safer without Betts IF we resigned Duckett. We gave up alot for Duckett and never really used him. He was fairly productive when he played and I think he would be a nice compliment to Portis.

I like the idea, however many of my fellow skins fans want your 2nd round pick as well.

do not want to trade Vilma for Portis...Vilma is the leader of the defense and IMO will be great next year.

if Mangini thinks Portis can be a good citizen and fit the "smart tough" mold he has set for his players, I'd make that trade.

Losing Vilma would break my heart to be honest.

For Betts? That would be just sickening.

It wouldn't be a straight up trade...

Thats like Jets fans saying they traded a first rounder for Jolley when we actually traded down into the second round and also gathered 6th round picks...

Not to worry though...this trade more than likely will not happen.

That would be a HORRIBLE choice. I'd rather have a younger Turner. Portis is a very good back but he's getting up there in age and has had some bad injuries. Absoletely no way you do that deal. I would give up a 2nd round pick for him but that's about it. Actually, 2nd rounder and Cedric Houston or Kevin Barlow.

He's only 26 and had only 1 bad injury (i think). Portis has proven he can carry the load and be a very effective (top 10) back in this league. 26 is not old. Turner has proven he can be a good backup behind a very good o-line. He looks like he has a ton of potential, but don't try and paint it like Portis is trash and Turner is gold.

    4.7 ypc and 6453 yrds in 5 seasons...and he is only 25
i know he has had some injuries, but the guy is a stud and a workhorse...
i think it depends on if we could replace vilma as easily...(edwards/fletcher/rookie are possible)
if we could actually get a pick w/ portis...that is a steal
i like vilma...and i would want to deal for portis for the 2nd rounder only, but to be able to get a guy like portis...would elevate the offense to a whole different level

I would be in favor of this trade. It's very fair but I've been down on Vilma lately and I love Betts and, if that sixth pick landed the Jets someone like Adams, the deal would be worth it.

i think alot would also depend on if they could get barton to restructure(or just decide he is worth the money) and remain the bigger lb in the middle...barton is a veteran vocal leader, and i dont think we would ever put ourselves out 2 starting mlbs in the middle of an offseason...
if they think that rhodes/barton/ellis/incoming replacement lb can be just as much of a leader...and play with an average ability then anything could happen....two veteran 3-4 lbs available in fletcher/edwards would make things easier
but still again...i'd like to do it for a 2nd

That about sums it up. NEVER EVER. This guy is a great leader, terrific tackler, is young and has great speed and intangibles.

    NO WAY!

The trade would have to be done just for the #6 pick, where the Jets could get the cornerstone of their 3-4 DL in Branch, or Anderson or even Carriker. Vilma's never going to be anything more than a "good" player in the 3-4, sorry to say.
