Niners, Leon Washington have spoken Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2010 11:11 AM ET We recently pointed out that a market for Jets running back Leon Washington, a restricted free agent recovering from a broken leg, could soon emerge. The folks at ESPN 1320 in Sacramento tweeted yesterday that the rumors linking Washington to the 49ers are heating up. Though the pot is not yet boiling, something definitely is going on. Per a league source, Washington has spoken with the Niners. There is some interest; however, no visit has been scheduled yet. Other teams are also interested, we're told. We don't currently know who they are. By tendering Washington at a second-round level only, the Jets have invited teams to sniff around the all-purpose tailback. The leg injury could scare some of them away. With the deadline for signing restricted free agents to offer sheets coming eight days before the April 22 draft, it might be that no one will be ready to take a chance on him before it's too late to do so.
Exactly, vague....sounds like they have talked to Keels. "Yea, teams are asking" "Who" "Can't tell you that"
I guess I just get tired of reading stuff like, "we are talking to teams" and no teams named. It is not like national secrets, if the teams are known, it makes it more credible, thus driving up the price. In this case, it appears to be hot air. But I am sure Tanny can see through that.
the Niners make sense. If i'm not mistaken, Jimmy Raye (former Jets running backs coach) is the OC over there...i could see him making a push for the Niners to sign him. The Niners 2nd round pick is quite appealing too.
Didn't you know? 'Vague' is Mike Florio's middle name. If Leon is going anywhere (which I doubt), the scoop is coming from Jay Glazer, bet on it.
The Jets are being really smart. Let some other team out there "set the market price" for Leon and go from there. If some dumb ass team is willing to offer him 6M a year coming off that serious of an injury let him walk and take the pick. If the price is right sign him. The only thing that worries me is if we do lose him then what? OK...we draft a guy but I'm not comfortable going ahead with Greene (who gets banged up) and a rookie. I know there are guys out there but we're restricted.
I thought so...it seems as though he's pulling the same stuff with Bodden and the Pats. "There are other teams interested but thats all I can say."
Ya he is the OC... and did a nice job with the Vernon Davis/Alex Smith resurgance. Hell we should have let Schotty walk and kept Raye.
Not to mention that the Niners need every skill that Leon offers. He is a great match for their system.
It was just tweeted again, talks are heating up. This sucks, I really want Leon to stay. With his work ethic he's going to comeback just as strong, if not stronger.
Beat writer Dave Hutchinson fully expects the Jets to match any offers for restricted free agent Leon Washington (broken leg). "The organization loves him as a player and person and truly believes he'll make a full recovery," explained Hutchinson. While he does concede that the Jets could lose Washington to a "poison pill" contract, that's a highly unlikely scenario.
