Yeah but if they dont grab Leon theyre gonna draft someone in the 2nd with that pick instead who will help them for years to come. Id rather them grab a high risk player with no future, than a young healthy player who is going to aggravate us for years to come.
I don't want him on the Pats either....I stated that in an earlier post. but if Leon doesn't come back to form....that 2nd rounder looks pretty good. Too bad there aren't any fortune tellers in the house....because it's certainly a big decision for Tanny if the Pats indeed sign him to an offer sheet.
I would rather see this team put itself in a position to compete for a SB in multiple years than go all out for one shot and hurt itself long term. The Leon tender was the best move to do that. Tate fills multiple roles as a returner AND a slot receiver. If we used the Leon pick on a back like Toby Gerhart, we'd get more production at RB and less of a Jack of all trades, but we'd also have an improved WR corps. I think it could well be an improvement overall, not just a replacement. We're likely drafting another RB and a slot receiver anyway. Why not do it with an extra pick and for better players? Overall, though, I think this move actually IMPROVES our chances of keeping Leon long term by forcing him to consider his real market value. If teams show him he isn't worth his contract demands on the open market, we benefit. If teams overpay, we would have lost him after one season anyway and could have addressed a need with a high draft pick.
And if the Pats try to poison pill him, they are stuck with a retarded contract for a backup RB/ST player that has never started a game. It wouldn't make sense. I don't think Leon is going anywhere.
I guess that's the biggest difference. You want the team to stay the same. We want the team to improve. I'm sorry that you think TJ, Feely, Lito, and Rhodes are 'the biggest names' on the team.
It's not a good assumption. Keels will have to deal with more than one FO who know what the actual market value for a ST/backup scatback is, and reality will set in. He's not going to get offers anywhere close to what Sproles got because of the injury. What he is going to get is reality, because unless some team is desperate for an injured backup RB that could return kicks before he had a double-compound to the leg, he's not going to get unreasonably high offers. What we are left with is an ofer sheet that Leon may think is good money considering his situation, and the Jets will be able to match it without having to talk to the retarded chipmunk. And if Leon doesn't sign an offer sheet, we get him for a year and that much cheaper. I'm going to guess that he will end up signing an offer sheet, though, and that the Jets don't hesitate to match it.
if Keels can be extracted from the situation entirely...that would be best for everyone...including Leon.
Leon Washington is the one player I don't want to see us lose. He'll come back from the broken leg and be a star again.
Tanny probably has a number in mind, and will see if anyone matches it....He is not gone by any means.
That is exactly what the Tender deprives him of. Once no one comes in with an offer like that, the Jets can throw almost anything at him with a little guaranteed money and he's almost forced to take it....He's not going to want to risk the uncertainty a second time.

NE hasn't drafted well in a long time, sure they hit on a player here and there but overall they have not drafted to their reputation. i'd rather take my chances w/ them using that 2nd rd pick. But you assume gerhart and Tate are can't miss guys and they are not. They MAY be good players, we don't know. Keeping Leon will not hurt us long term. I could understand that thinking w/ Jones(more in a capped year than this year) but not w/ Leon. As long as we re-sign him I'm ok w/ it but it would be a big blow if we lost him after letting Jones go. Leon can be much more than a backup RB/STs player. I believe he can be an every down back, he won't be here but I think he can get the bulk of the carries and be really successful.
