Jets can find Giacomini's replacement a lot easier than you think. So if they cut Brick they get 13M back, this makes the discussion of who to retain and who not to retain irrelevant as the Jets would have enough to keep them both as well as others. That's a risky move to cut Brick all together and not find a way to retain his services. It would be nice for them to find a way to cut that cap hit in half somehow. Peyton Manning took a 4M pay-cut last season for the better of the team and now they are in the SB. Sometimes these things happen especially if you have a solid coaching staff and front office that instills a positive culture within the organization. Peyton wasn't the first to take a pay-cut and he won't be the last. I think they can live with Brick another year, if he doesn't take a pay-cut he's gone all-together. I'm not deflecting anything, I am just making a point that these roster fillers [i.e. Sudfeld, Thompkins, Henderson arguably considering his prior engagements] don't make much money and they barely put a dent on the cap. To even argue the bottom of the active roster is reaching my man. In regards to Revis, I thought you knew me better, I always do my research. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-je...-deal-could-solve-jets-cap-woes-but-its-risky This would be a costly decision, but it can be done. I just disproved everything you said with real life examples.
I disagree that it's so easy to find quality OTs, especially if you're talking about replacing both of them and one still needs a backup at LT. Hopefully, Brick is reasonable and will be willing to take a pay cut. No, it isn't reaching, when one has only so many draft picks, and almost one-half their roster are FAs already. The more that are cut, the more that have to be replaced. With the players that are here, some of them may not be that great, but they already know the system. Any new player may not be much better, but has to learn the system, and it's just more contracts that have to be negotiated in a relatively short period of time. I was shocked by your Revis comments precisely because I thought I knew you better. Please don't tell me that you think that Cimini's idea is a good idea. Cimini is wrong. They can cut him after the 2016 season and save $7,333,333. They don't have to wait until after the 2017 season to save money by cutting him. He's getting older and slower and isn't going to get any better. Let some other team pay him a ton of money. I'd rather move on and get someone in here younger, faster and cheaper, and quite possibly better at this stage of their respective careers. It could be done, but would be a dumb decision and move. The only possible justification would be that if Mac thought the Jets were a player or two from being a serious contender for the SB. They aren't, and nothing he has said or done so far suggests that he is delusional. You didn't disprove anything. I've said all along that there was little or nothing they could do to get an appreciable amount of additional space this season without kicking cap money into future years, which is dumb and I'm totally against. If anything, you proved my point, i.e., that it can't be done without screwing up future caps.
I never said it was a good idea, but it can be done. The cap isn't as bad as many think. There are so many possibilities in terms of the cap and that's where this discussion is really going, we can create flexibility short-term. We can create cap space to resign our most important players that's my point at the end of the day, it's absolutely doable. The Steelers did this with Troy P a while back, just kept restructuring his contract. I proved that players take pay cuts [potentially Brick] and I proved you can create more cap space to sign Snacks and Mo. The consequence of restructuring Revis's contract, was never intended to be in this conversation.
Breno is pulling $5 million for next season. He is clearly making too much for the quality of play he brings to the table. I would think we could upgrade the position AND save cap space there. Guys like Chris Clark or Eric Winston gave about the same kind of performance at about $1 million this year, and are on the market. Not saying we should go grab one of those two, only that we shouldn't take moving Breno off the table. Gilchrest is also at $5 million, although I thought he played okay for the most part, and the guaranteed portion of his salary is a bit higher. The advantage to moving him is that I think we have suitable (and cheaper) replacements available in AA and JJ. Other than the obvious guys like Cromartie and Cumberland, those are the two contracts that jump out as being pretty easy cuts. Cutting both nets us a little more than $8 million. I think NC is right that we shouldn't try to replace all our OTs at once, but I think it's much easier and more sensible to replace Breno now rather than wait.
i'm thinking like you but looking at skrine's contract. 7.5 mil nothing guaranteed after 2016. convert 6 mil of that to a roster bonus. prime candidate to free up space. we will resign mo,fitz, snacks and powell but i'm not cutting breno right now.
I didn't think of Skrine at all. With the depth in the secondary this would be a much better idea then cutting Breno as we have no depth there.
I think Skrine is more logical than Revis. We want Revis off the books as quickly as possible given his obvious state of decline IMO. I'd rather pay the younger Skrine, for longer, who really plays like a 3rd safety and has plenty of speed. I'm back and forth on the idea of cutting Giacomini. It seems like it'll save us a good amount of cap space while signing one of these guys: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/right-tackle/ When do we have to make the decision by? I believe it's before free agency. It's a gamble and I'm thinking a stupid one at this point given that would mean we may essentially have to replace the entire right side with only Brian Winters on the roster with starting experience and no quality backup C, LG, LT.
Good idea. If they plan on keeping Skrine around, fine. I just don't want them having a bunch of cap space being taken up in future seasons with dead money. If Petty pans out, I figure this team should be a serious contender for the SB by the 2018 season and maybe 2017. The last thing they need then is to hampered by the cap and have to cut players or not be able to sign a FA who could put them over the top. This coming season doesn't matter. Between the question marks on their roster, the cap issue they have, and their tougher schedule, more than likely, the team isn't going to the playoffs this season, either. IMO it's better to take their cap hits this season and get them out of the way so they're clear going forward.
