Petty is a more viable starter than Hackenberg (at this time)

Yeah, none of the QBs are really ready to start this year. To be honest, I don't think any of them are that good either, a lot of ways to improve the football team in other areas this draft. I wouldn't draft one in our first 4 selections. I absolutely agree with your philosophy, I don't mind red-shirting a QB again, I just don't see anyone worth spending a pick on. Maybe if we get to the 5th round sure maybe we can look at a QB.

    Its all about risk management.

For teams in desperate need of a QB, its riskier to pass on a star QB than to pick a mediocre QB early and he flames out. Thats why these guys get selected earlier than they should and further advantages those teams that already have one on roster who can focus on drafting talent elsewhere.

It's very risky considering the Jets already have 2 young QBs on the roster that never really got enough practice reps during TC / OTAs. They threw Petty out there barely prepared, at best 10% chemistry with the first team. Jets to me need to see what these guys got, and that requires a year of just giving them that opportunity. Build the foundation and the QB will come.

100% correct. Given they already drafted Petty and Hackenberg, they should only draft a QB in 2017 if they are certain that guy is a day one starter and future franchise QB.

They are picking 6th. They have the ammo to move up if needed, but nobody thinks the top 5 will be taking a QB. So the Jets have their pick of who they want this class. They can select Watson, Trubisky, Mahomes... The fact that they brought in McCown and paid him what they did tells you what they think of this draft class and its potential to give you a day 1 starter. All these guys are projects and red shirts. They all have potential, but the Jets already have 2 guys with potential on roster.

    So I think they pass.

But there will be pressure on Mac to get it right. If they pass on QB and one of these guys is the new Derek Carr then Mac will be looking for new work.

See, i don't think there is any reason not to draft a qb as soon as his grade matches the pick. if they have to be redshirted so be it. Can't just sit idle waiting to have the top prospect in the last 10 years to be available to you. keep churning that depth chart and promote competition.

Problem is when he was playing last year we mainly only saw all these go routes which of course led to more INT but also didn't give us too great of a glimpse. In Baylor he was mainly shotgun his entire career. So we know if there's anything he SHOULD be good at are go routes

Thats fine, I agree with that. But if you bring in project QB's like Petty and Hack, you give them a few years to develop. You only cut them when you are sure their capability to learn and execute a pro style system has plateaued and they are not getting it done.

Hack is nowhere near that point. He has at least another season or two. The argument is whether Petty has plateaued and that is all you are going to get, or can he get better? We all dont know. But I've seen enough that I want him competing in training camp in 2017, and given a fair shot with the ones.

I agree with all but your last sentence, and I totally disagree with that. He could be, but why would Mac necessarily be looking for work just because he passed up on a QB who succeeds elsewhere? Just because a QB succeeds with one team doesn't mean that he would with another team in a different offensive system with different coaching and philosophies. That statement also doesn't take into account that either Petty or Hack (or even both) could prove to be a quality starting QB this season and/or the players that Mac takes instead could prove to be great players who help the Jets a LOT, and become perennial All Pros or Pro Bowlers. In fact, they don't even have to reach that level, they could just be very, very good starters who elevate the Jets' level of play and provide leadership on a team that is in need of leaders.

I disagree. The Jets have two young QBs who haven't really gotten an opportunity yet. They've received little reps in practice, little work with the 1st team offense, and probably little coaching as well. IMO the Jets should only draft a QB this season if they think one is head and shoulders better than Petty and Hack and think he can start day one. They already have two project QBs. They don't need a 3rd. They don't need to keep 4 QBs on the roster again, and it would be foolish to cut/trade Petty or Hack at this point before they've been given a realistic chance.

Now if they want to draft one in a lower round that they could safely stash on the PS and think he could possibly develop and then be traded in a year or two, fine, but I don't think they should take one in the first 4 rounds (including the 3rd round compensatory pick, which for all intents and purposes is a 4th round pick).

Your right. IF Petty or Hack pan out then Mac will look very smart for picking two smart projects and sticking with the development plan.

By year 3 its time to earn your keep, otherwise we're wasting good reps on bad players. if petty can't be qb 1 or 2 he needs to go. his replacement should be drafted this year. next year hack is in the same boat and unless he made us not need a qb anymore.
When you need a qb you take one as soon as value matches pick, period. anything else and you are handicapping your chances of finding a qb.

While I'm favor of drafting Mahomes (or possibly Watson), if the Jets don't think they can be their FQB, or be capable of starting sometime this season, then I agree they shouldn't draft a QB in the first two rounds.

If they don't, I still think they should take someone like Webb or Peterman as insurance in case Petty or Hack really can't do the job. After all, we've really seen no proof that Petty or Hack can even be backups, let alone FQBs. Yes, that's not really their fault, but it is what it is. In the real world you need to show the goods right away or you're gone. Harsh, but true. So yeah, give Pettenberg a shot, but take a QB anyway, especially if you think one of them can be the FQB. And let's drop all of this talk about "Fold for Darnold", or whatever the catch phrase is, because even if the Jets "won" the 1st pick - about as likely as them winning the SB based on their history - there is no guarantee that Darnold, or whoever the Super QB du jour is, will wind up living up to their billing.

I'm old enough to remember some pretty good quarterbacks that sat on the bench for a few years or played and sucked until they "got it".

10th round draft pick Roger Staubach didn't start a game until he was 27 years old.

I realize the league is a different place these days. Bigger money, accelerated expectations...minute by minute updates via the interwebz.

But for the QB position...getting up to speed in the NFL is pretty much the same struggle for a player...no matter what system he experienced in college. No rookie qb has ever played in the Super Bowl. That probably won't change any time soon. Big Ben was the youngest I believe...and he played like shit.

We can draft all the quarterbacks we want. We aren't good at recognising or developing them, and we're impatient as well.

Nice way to stack the deck against...

Earlier I gave stats I think Petty needs to attain to be considered a viable starter. But your probably right if he doesn't take a leap this year the Jets should move on. But the second point I don't get. So if they think value matches pick this year they should take 2 QB's in the second and fourth rounds? Even if there is equivalent value at other positions? I'm sure that's not what you mean.

I am OK with carrying 4 this year. As long as the rookie doesn't impede the Jets evaluation of Petty and Hack. Not sure how that is done.

redskins did ok taking qbs at 1 and 4 so while it may be extreme there is merit to doing it.

A point I tried to make in another thread previously, is that with the new CBA, where all rookie salaries are slotted, teams should be able to somewhat get back to giving QBs time to develop. It's not going to be like the 70's but it should change a bit I would think.

It's especially needed now since it's a crap shoot with a limited number college teams running pro style O. Makes it so much harder to scout the players. That's one reason I am really against drafting a 1st rd QB unless they are absolutely sure he can make the jump.
