You don't think Jet Fans are taking this quietly do ya? Nothing could be further from the truth.. Just no billboards yet. They haven't finished paying for the last one evidently.
now that I think about it, this changes so little about anything I might piss myself. So a week ago we were a team that had Geno Smith as our incumbent starter with a real chance he isn't and now… nothing has changed. for all those fretting over Smith getting a free ride, he's not, because this isn't set in stone, its just status quo. all fitzpatrick has to do is prove he's the more effective passer and leader (or Smith falls on his face, or even both) and PRESTO! guess who's starting week 1?
What we do know is.... Smith isn't as good as the Geno that played that last Miami game. Smith isn't as bad as the Geno that played the Buffalo and SD games. I guess the new OC isn't using the prior two seasons as evaluation platforms. All well and good, but he'd better be right about it..
Bowles and Gailey played Geno Smith last year? Fitzpatrick was riding the pine? No and no....PLUS that coaching staff gave Vick a try and he was worse. Try thinking just a little bit before posting please.
I think we all knew Geno would start. Fitztragic is coming off of an injury, and wasn't exactly Joe Montana to begin with. We didn't end up with Mariota, so..Geno gets his third and final chance. But, if they preach competition at every level, it would've been fair to get through 1-2 weeks of training camp and then call it. Geno still could've gotten the majority of the reps, and it wouldn't have seemed like a sham, even if it was a foregone conclusion. As it is, even with being named the starter, Geno has about 8, but perhaps as few as 6 games to save his job. If he does really well in the first 8 games, he'll get the rest of the season, and could remain the Jets quarterback. If he does poorly, Fitztragic will take over, and Geno will be cut in the off-season. That's "Accountability". Then we go into 2016 with a draft pick that falls into our lap, or Bryce Petty gets his chance to see what he's worth. I know a lot of people hate on Geno- and he's surely had some awful, awful games. But he's also been under a horrible offensive scheme, with some truly terrible WRs. Doesn't excuse his bad throws and turnovers, but when you are throwing balls to Saalim Hakim and shit, I think your chances of winning were dead on arrival anyway. Since we had no other realistic options, I'm ok with giving Geno the year with good WRs, a decent OC and a coach that isn't an offensive moron (we hope) to see what he truly can do. If he fails this year, it's all on his shoulders, and he'll pay with his job. Fair enough.
Fans are completely overblowing this as usual. The logic is simple: work on Geno getting as comfortable with the offense as possible, and when the season rolls around, see if his level of play is above what Gailey already knows Fitzpatrick's is in his system. There's a reason we traded a draft choice for this guy instead of signing one of the other vets. Aside from the simple logic behind it, the choice to announce it also makes sense given that this is the NY media you're dealing with, and by saying nothing, or sticking with the pc answer of "open competition", the topic would have beaten to death the entire summer and pre-season every single day, which is a distraction to the coaches and players. It wouldn't surprise be one bit to see Geno play the position efficiently this year, but if after given every opportunity to learn the system through TC and pre-season he shows no signs of grasping it, you better believe Fitzpatrick is taking that first snap against the Browns. At least at that point the CS knows Geno is not their guy going forward, and the plan next year becomes find someone who is, or give Petty his opportunity. So far it appears that the new regime in charge of the Jets uses logic, which unfortunately many fans will fail to understand, or choose not to due to their own impatience/desire to complain.
He can make all of the throws, we've seen that already. Inconsistent yes, he holds onto the ball far too long - that part is all mental. That throw to Decker in the Packers game was a perfect throw between the corner and safety.
Appeals to false authority are logical fallacies. More to the point, what is hte point of having a sports message board? Is it to debate what is going on with the team, which includes sharing opinions about how the team is run? Or is it nothing more than being a homer who posts uncritical approval of the moves the team is making? All the moves? I get that you think the answer is to be a homer. But I don't.
No need to be wordy here. If you don't know the difference between competition and no competition, you have a problem that no one's posts here can fix.
This. it really doesn't matter at all. If the CS is going to work things through Geno, then let's see what happens. I trust Chan he has a good track record.
The fans are seriously the ones that create all this pre-conceived "off season drama". Then the same fans complain that the Jets are full of offseason drama. Its like a vicious cycle. Because of all the uproar, the next time the coaches have a press conference, they'll address that if Geno sucks he wont be the starter. We will find out that the best players will play. All the posters that love to stir up the controversy and argue/complain will leave. Then the next time something slightly out of the norm happens, the same cycle will begin again.
