Because even if he plays for a milion dollars there is no guarantee for him to have his job regardless of how he does this year

    world peace

    HTML:
but unlike baseball there is a salary cap and they need to make decisions for the TEAM
although i agree, a contract was signed. When the JETS signed him, they felt it was best for the team. Since they changed their minds, you cant change a contract. (Unless Chad is willing)

For the record, i am a HUGE chad fan, but i am on the fence in terms of his future. I personally dont know what i want. Ultimately, i want him to come back and lead us to a super bowl, but then again, we all want world peace.

So? If he does well and the Jets decide to say adios then he command a much higher contract and status then he would if he was outright released by the Jets. If he gets released, he's going to end up signing for Quincy Carter type money, and probably won't see the field unless the starter gets hurt.

Right now both the Jets and Pennington are playing a high stakes Poker game.Who's going to fold ,that's the question. The Jets can't afford to pay him $9M in bonus and salary. On the other hand cutting him costs them $12M in NFL cap room. Both sides need to get a deal done otherwise Chad will be a ex-Jet come March 3.

I don't think either side wants him to be released, but if you were in his position, would you be so quick to take that offer, I still think that he will be here, this is just bargaining, and jumping at the first offer isn't smart at all.

This is all posturing. There's plenty of time left for Condon to make counter offers. This could go right down to the wire and probably will and Condon knows it. In the end, it's Chad who'll do the blinking, as well he should.

Like 3rdandDraw says, Pennington is far better off here than elswhere (if there even would be an elsewhere). In fact, I think the offer is quite generous! $1 million and huge incentive potential if we win games. Many other teams wouldn't have even offered that much.

Pennington needs to take this generous offer and run like a thief in the night before the Jets change their minds, decide to do an about-face, bite the Cap bullet and totally cut his damaged ass.

Chad will NOT make the money he's due if he's cut.

Chad will not make any money if no one picks him up.

If picked up, he'll make the veteran minimum.

In my OPINION, sign the million dollar deal, with playing incentives up to 8. You can still get your money back, no it's not fair, but it might be HIS best alternative.

At times, I would think you were a little too extreme. You may be right here.

It's kinda like putting off surgery. You know you need it. Might as well just do what has to be done and get it over with. After the purge, if we go 4-12 next year, it won't be because of the coaching.

    "Thanks Herm........Dick."

No part whatsoever. Perhaps Chad is following the advice of his agent who may be trying to squeeze the Jets for a bit more base salary or up front money.

I'm actually to the point with all this, that, if the Jets offer Chad more than $2-3, I'm going to be pissed. He's not worth more than that to us. I hope the Jets FO sticks to their guns with Condon and smacks him around even. "Take it or leave it, whatcha gonna do, Tom? That's our final offer."

Look, Chad gave up plenty for this team... laid his career on the line. It can even be argued that Chad's injuries were the direct result of his doing so and that Herm even aided and abetted. Fine. And this is all so. But we gave Mr. Pennington $22 million to appear in 18 games. It's more than a wash, IMO. The past is history.

Tannenbaum: "Okay Tom, we'll give you $2 million and leave the incentives as they are. Final offer." Screw it if he doesn't go for it. We blow the whole thing up, take our lumps now and move on. Chad can go warm the bench somewhere as a backup for $500,000 per year.

I'm glad the Jets are playing hardball. I won't lose respect for Penny or Mawae if they choose to go in a different direction, they are living by the contracts they signed, and which the team signed understanding the probability of injury down the road. But it doesn't seem like there is much being lost on the field. Mawae we will miss for a year. Chad we've missed since 2003. But it's like that moment when a beekeeper crushes an old dying queen so it can be replaced by a newer, younger one, and the hive can live on.

Curtis Martin continues to impress me. He also could be the best of the three, if you can only keep one, which is apparently the case.

Sowell and Kendall are going to be missed. Law, Abe, and Fiedler not so much.

In respect of Pennington's "decision". It more than likely is the first shot in a negotiation where he and his agent are checking to see if there is any wiggle. It could be that the opportunity to make up $s on incentives worries Chad. On the other hand it might be down to Condon. 10% of $1M is a less than 10% of a higher fugure.

As for cries of "step up Mr Jet" I believe Pennington will need to consider how he "represents" in future if he is to avoid this.

I believe he should be given a minimum contract with a mix of incentives na d be made to win the starter spot. If he can't we're rebuilding anyway.
