Patriot-News Special Report coming Monday: Inside the Jerry Sandusky investigation - why it took so long

Since former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was indicted on 40 counts related to child sex abuse - after the initial shock at the allegations of eight victims as young as seven years old - one of the most frequent questions has been: Why did the investigation take so long?

On Monday, Patriot-News reporter Sara Ganim provides the answers, based on sources close to the investigation and official records. The bottom line: a complex probe involving finding multiple potential victims and witnesses, and reviewing thousands of pages of documents, can easily take three years. But THIS one probably did not have to.

I seriously have never supported the death penalty in college football (had I been alive I'd have probably been ok with SMU's ouster though.) PSU deserves the death penalty. Demolish the facilities and salt the earth, too much evil has occurred there.

College students are not known for "classy" behavior towards opposing teams. One year, the Texas A&M Aggies stole UT's mascot and ate it.

That is my point. It is going to be ugly.

Penn State should cancel their season, complete a total investigation of who knew what and when, clean out ALL of the bad apples, and start over with a new AD and coaching staff.

While the investigation should probably have been completed quicker, I won't hammer them with criticism b/c the police and prosecutors never gave up the case.

At worst, the prosecution is guilty of being slow.
At best, Penn State is guilty of ignoringing a pedophile using their facilities for his crimes.

U.S. attorney pledges support in probes of Sandusky, Penn State

U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith today pledged his office's support to state and federal investigations regarding child molestation charges lodged against Jerry Sandusky, former defensive coordinator for Penn State University's football team.

Smith, who is assigned to U.S. Middle District Court for Pennsylvania, said his office's general practice is to not comment on ongoing investigations. However, since Sandusky was charged by the state attorney general's office on Nov. 4, his office is receiving questions concerning potential federal involvement in the case.

"We recognize that the public disclosures concerning (the Sandusky case) are extremely disturbing because they involve the safety of children and therefore merit thorough review of the facts and appropriate action by law enforcement at all levels, including federal agencies," Smith said.

He said his office will assist a U.S. Department of Education investigation as to whether Penn State officials failed to report incidents of sexual abuse on campus, as required by federal law. Smith said he cannot discuss specifics of that probe.

Also, Smith said his office has contacted the attorney general and offered to provide assistance, including prosecutorial help, if needed. "We will coordinate the work of both offices in this important matter as much as possible," he said.

It doesn't look like Sandusky, anyway. Sandusky is a pretty generic-looking grey-haired man, though, so I expect some baby boomers to be getting the occasional weird look.

Apperently in 1998 they did go to the Police about Sandusky and the Police didnt pursue it because their wasnt enough evidence.

If this is true then the Police might be the ones to take the blame.

The judge worked at the charity he founded. She should have reclused herself but instead let him out free and clear. The 100K only has to be paid if he skips the court procedings. She took care of him.
