Everyone here is missing the fact that Kerney has played in the 3-4 while in Atlanta (under Wade Phillips?). However, (a) Kerney hated the position of 3-4 DE and would never play for a 3-4 team after that experience because (b) he was average at best for the position. He wasn't a complete failure, but his pass rushing was tremendously limited and he was not stout enough against the run. Also he did not have the agility or speed to cover the linebacker position so his only option, especially 5 or so years later is to play DE.
