1. It's 2008. 2. He's a QB. 3. He wasn't a very athletic QB to begin with. If McGahee and Gore can be productive RBs post-fucking up their knee, I'm sure a guy like Tom Brady will be fine as a QB.
The thing is this team is built to win now, Cutler isn't a win now QB; Brett Favre is. Honestly Cutler could go onto win 3 championships the next decade but if we get that one I'm happy. There are so many factors to look at too, who knows if Cutler could handle the pressure of playing in NY. And O BTW we did get a QB that year and many including Ron Jaworski were saying he was the best QB in the draft. Who knows how 2 years of playing behind Brett will help Kellen.
Cutler was the best NFL style QB in that draft. Best arm, best pocket presence, smartest and had a quiet confidence. He was also a way better athlete than they thought when they got him in the combine,faster and stronger than they thought he would be. The biggest knock was he played at Vandy. Our line was a mess, but Brick has been a slight disappointment so far, Joe Thomas already surpassed him. Leinert was a problem because he got star treatment, a wonky eye and Pennington's arm. I knew Young wouldn't last long when he picked an agent( he didn't use a legit NFL agent ala Ricky Williams, always a huge red flag)
Having a wife and in-laws that are Bronco fans I have watched nearly every Bronco game in the last three seasons. Cutler has looked just okay in his nearly season-and-a-half as a starter. I actually was disappointed in his play last season (regardless of the loss of Walker). I expected him to take a big step forward last season, but he was pretty inconsistent. Hopefully, he can put it together this season. He is certainly off to a good start. Either way, it amazes me how many people are coming out of the woodwork the last 24 hours saying how the Jets should have drafted Cutler Joe Thomas and D'Brickashaw weren't even in the same draft.
From what I remember Cutler was battling Diabetes last season and has it under control now. I full expect him to be a very good NFL QB. That said, Brick was absolutely the right pick for us in '06
Fair point, perhaps that explains some of it...we will never now. It just seems stupid that Cutler plays one excellent game against a JV squad and you have 20 people on here bashing the FO for not selecting him 3 drafts ago when most people were ridiculing the Broncos for trading up and reaching for him at the time.
Oh I agree. Hind sight is always 20-20. I takes a small bit of discipline to remember that we had no left tackle and tons of holes in our O-line entering that draft. Adding a QB would not have helped in the least bit. Taking Brick and Mangold in the first was one of the smartest thing to do. The best Left tackle and best center available in the same draft. I could not have, and still could not be, any happier with the '06 draft. We started to build a team the way they should be built that day. Trenches out.
Just to clarify...it's not hindsight when you wanted the player before the draft. We needed offensive linemen--it's true, but at #4, we needed a perennial All-Pro. Maybe Ferguson gets there...it's very possible, but given the choice between gaining a franchise LT and a franchise QB, give me the QB. Finally, like I said originally, I'm excited about what I've seen from Ratliff. Maybe our fortunes have turned.

We tried to trade back up to get him. But failed. Taking him at four would have been ultra ballsy as a first pick of a new regime.... they were right to pick safe. but tried to go back up. cutler is the bomb.

Ken O'Brien had nice throwing skills, he wasn't remotely in the same league as Marino. Marino was a great QB with off the chart skills. Anyone who denies that doesn't have a clue.
If you wanted him before the draft then fair enough. I was not sold on any of the top QB's that year, but of the three liked Cutler the most. Brick has steadily improved and now with an actual guard next to him instead of a traffic cone he has looked much, much better then last season. I have no doubt he can be a very good LT for us for a very long time. Ratliff looked great this preseason. Kellen looked very good last preseason. I'll hold back my hopes till I see him do good against a first team D not playing a junk preseason scheme. I hope one of the 3 young guys turns out to be a very good QB for us.
Agreed. I remember that draft day so verry very well.. Everyone said "Who???".... :rofl: I wanted Cutler as well. On this board, everyone was still enamoured with CP's accuracy and the popular opinion was, if I recall correctly:"strong armed Qb's don't win in the league/You don't need a strong arm to win/We don't need Cutler".. What's past is past now. The Jets are well known for passing up exceptional Qb's in the draft. That, and dissapointing their fanbase, are the two most consistent things about the NYJ's...
True, but it's much easier to succeed at QB with a great LT. It's not like we took Young or Leinart instead of Cutler.
