What people keep forgetting is that the foundation of this Jets franchise, EVEN NOW, belongs to the Hess era. Hess brought in BP and helped to turn this franchise around before he died. Like it or not, we have had hires heavily influenced by that period even now. Terry Bradway is from the BP era, as it Tanny. BP himself GMed us from the Hess to Woody era. Mangini is a product or the same BP/Belly system and even Sparano has BP ties. I think many of these guys deserve a lot of blame for our current failures, but if you want to argue that we have been a success then you have to give them credit for that success. Consequently, that credit extends to a systematic change made by Hess and inherited by Woody. If anything, Woody has come dangerously close to demolishing this solid foundation. I'd argue, in fact, that he finally may have, but we will see.

I agree with the poster to whom you were responding. Hess wanted to win but, except at the very end, just didn't get his act together. Woody wants to milk this team to make money. If winning makes the team more profitable then great. OTOH, if the team was just as profitable as a loser, or even more profitable, I think we would be utterly screwed. I think Woody is an owner in the mold of the Bidwells in the sense that the team is an investment. The only difference is he is willing to put money into his investment to increase his return whereas the Bidwells, for years, just milked and milked, and put nothing into the Cardinals.

It isn't overrated. It may be mentioned too liberally, but it's not overrated. Distractions can be detrimental to a team...especially in football when you only play one game a week.

When the NFL owners' meetings take place, does Jerry Jones give Woody Johnson a wedgie?

Holmes must be amused seeing the locker room dissolve into even MORE chaos without him. I would never have thought that possible.

The fact that the franchise is an absolute joke. The lack of talent, infighting, bad decisions, etc...They're a joke and it starts at the top.

I just don't understand the hatred toward Woody. The guy has given Tannenbaum all the resources he needs to build a championship team. He's opened up the wallet for guys like Faneca, Woody, Tomlinson, Richardson, Scott, Landry, Cromartie, Holmes, Burress, Revis (and he will again).

Doesn't seem like a guy whose not interested in winning to me. All Woody Johnson and any owner has to do is provide the resources for the General Manager and the football people around him to build a team.

No, there are a three possibilities. Either Woody:

    #1) Doesn't care.
#2) Doesn't know enough about football or life to know what a good GM looks like.
#3) Cares and knows that Tanny blows as a GM but has rationalized another reason(most like based on pride or delusion) to keep him.

None of these three would surprise me.

Woody may say some things at the wrong time but to say he is not the best owner the Jets have had is pretty silly. Yea things are pretty dark now but for the most part, the Jets have been playoff challengers.

I can tell you guys about bad ownership.

Jerry Jones part two, the cowboys are a 500 team in the past ten years, Woody Johnson is the Jets version, he can say all the right things but it does not mean he actually has the skill set to bring the idea to fruition, the Jets have had success with him as an owner but the the hard part is sustaining it.

Thats what separates great organizations like Steelers from the Jets.

Owners who can make it happen and not just spew a cliched response.

I don't see him making the right moves to get this team heading in the right direction, he feels many things can be corrected. The problem is is the talent and the personnel moves that MT has made, it has cost this team youth and depth, that needs to be corrected and its not an X and O issue.

Show us Jet fans that you care and bring in qualified people to do the job and then we will believe.

it's been about as good as it can be w/o a SB app.

The ONLY time Leon Hess showed he wanted to win was on his deathbed bringing in Parcells.

Leon didn't fleece the fans but the Jets were a hibby and he wasn't a guy concenred w/ winning.

He got full control in 1984, he never had close to the success despite owning the team for many more years.

Woody is absolutely nothing like Jerry Jones(who won THREE SBs by the way).

Art Rooney owned the Steelers from 1933-1971 w/ ONE playoff app and ZERO playoff wins. Pitt then won 4 SBs in 6 seasons and he was the greatest owner ever.

Yes but Hess had 50% control right after SB3 & got 1/4 more several years later so he had "full" control at the point he became the majority owner with 75% of the team. He may have bought the last 25% in the 80s but he had full control way before that

Tebow's presence on the team is symptomatic of a bigger problem. Tebow himself is not part of that. Blaming Tebow for what's going on is like killig the messenger - it solves nothing and it won't stop the message from being sent over and over again until the source is dealt with.
