Very well. As you all have seen, a quality DL can be had at pick 29 or 30 (a glorified 2nd rounder, if you ask me.) Vince Wilfork was a late 1st rounder if my memory serves me correct. (22nd or 23rd, I believe.) With that said... still a glorified 2nd rounder is, a glorified 2nd rounder. If Giants are willing to part with their 2nd round pick (which will be low as well, in fact) and Osi for Jets 1st, how does that sound to the rest of you guys? (Not that it will happen; as slimjasi noted, Jets don't have the money and Giants are not trading him to Jets anyway.)
No. Giants will trade him to the Jets if Jets were to offer decent pick. This is business. They don't care if we share stadiums or if we are in a 'cold war'. But the Jets will not trade for him and neither would I want us to trade away a first for him even if we had the money. He'll be turning 30 during the season. He might have a couple of good years, but you don't give up a 1st for a couple of good years. The most I'd offer is a 3rd...a late 3rd. He's not worth a 1st. But Jets don't have the money to bring him on in any case regardless of what 3-4 position he'll play and Im surprised this thread hasn't been locked yet.
Legit pass rushers are hard to come by. I think the jets can afford him with the money the didn't spend on nnamdi, a Sanchez restructure, and a more cap friendly Harris long term deal. If Rex says to tanny that he is the pass rusher they need I would offer the first if it means overpaying so the giants send him across town. 3 years of a pass rush with this team as its set up could get us that super bowl championship we have been looking for for so long.
Jets did bring in Plax and Cro for the money they saved on Nnamdi. Also, Giants demand is a 1st rounder. You wouldn't want to negotiate it?
They had to be offering around 50 mill to nnamdi. Between plax and cro they spent 35. As far as the 1st rounder goes. Put your ears out there and find out what others are offering and one up them. If the most anyone is offering is a third offer a second. My point with that is the jet pick is likely to be a late rounder so in order for the giants to trade him to is rather than some other team we would have to make them a better offer. And again it also depends on how Rex thinks he fits. If he will be that rush outside linebacker we need or if he thinks he doesn't fit in our scheme is something I can't say for sure.
50M vs 35M is a stupid comparison as the cap is yearly. they offered between 10 and 12 million per year to Aso, they signed Cro for 8 and Plax for 3. so they spent the same amount maybe more for this year, and only save 2-4 million the next 3 after that. Osi isn't signing for anywhere near that little. Trading Cotchery might save an extra 3-4 next year but almost nothing this year. They would need major restructures or cuts to sign Osi after a trade.
Like I said... 1. Quality DL can be had at a low draft pick. With the scouting department that Jets have, they should be able to find a decent pass rusher next year. I don't like trading the 1st rounder away either. 2. Frankly speaking, I don't know if Osi will pan out here. He is a DE, not an OLB - meaning Jets will have to go through yet another Gholston experiment. I was throwing a bone there, but I am not in favor of this move. Maybe 3rd or lower, but nothing higher (like you said.) 3. Osi will look for top dollar either way - he's not coming here, that's for certain.
I am jealous of Giants D-Line. A D-Line keeps you in the game with the best offensive teams. (Giants-Pats SB). It is the missing link to the Jets getting the upper hand on the Pats!!! I think Rex understands that now because Wilkerson looks like an absolute Badass and K.Ellis reminds me of a young Jenkins!!. Osi would provide the experience and attitude that strahan used to provide for the Giants.
I guess you forgot we beat the Patriots in the playoffs last year. It was the Steelers we got defeated by.
Of course that notion is nonsense...but the notion that we can reasonably trade for him is even more nonsensical .
Contractually, I do think this would be possible: Let's say the Jets were $12 million under the cap after signing Holmes, which is what we supposedly offered Nnamdi. We signed Cro for $8 million and Plaxico for $3 million, putting us $1 million under. Then, we resigned Harris, whose only making $4 million this year, down from his $10 million franchise number, which saves us an extra $6 million and puts us at $7 million under. If we traded for Osi, we would presumably cut BT, saving another $3 million and getting us down to $10 million under, which is probably around the number Osi is looking for. Now, that doesn't take into account draft pick signings, guys we've signed like Smith and Turner, and whatever guys we sign for depth, which would probably be another few million. But maybe that's why Tanny might be looking to trade Cotch and I'm sure he could find a way to clear another few million. Thus, I think Tanny COULD figure it out and make the numbers work. Still doubt it happens though, but you never know...this is Tanny's type of move and it would go along with his comments yesterday that the Jets had a few things up their sleeves, his decision to sign a cheaper Plax over Braylon, and his decision to keep Harris' number low this year.
