What a joke. Now the umpires wait until they're told by players to make a call. Glad that Girardi wasn't tolerating that BS.
i wonder if Torre would've even left the dugout for that. That was an amazing arguement by Girardi, thats the type of fire I was expecting from him when he was hired. now hopefully that lights a spark up under the teams ass
Melancon, Cox, Whelan, Sanchez, McCutchen... and some people are worried about Joba moving to the rotation.
Speaking of pitching prospects, Christian Garcia tonight: 6 IP 0 ER 2 H 1 BB 10 K He's healthy and becoming a legitimate top prospect once again.
Olney: Another source confirmed, and said they don't think he'll pitch much past 5 years and could begin to decline any day now. So even if Hughes and Kennedy bust, this could turn out to be the best trade they didn't make.
Nice game by Kennedy. Now if he can do it twice in a row or even twice in a month I may start changing my opinion of him.
Yeah well, you'll still see bitching until his ERA goes to 4+ and Kennedy and Hughes aren't combining for 37 wins. ---------------- Anyway, I wasn't around much the last week due to this training class I've been in. I also don't log on much during the weekend, so I mostly missed the Mets series. ---------------- As for the 8th inning, Farnsworth is the man, at least for the near term. I expect he'll stay in that role the rest of the year, then return next year to it as well. (I think his contract is up right? Expect a one-year deal, maybe an option for 2 more.) For more than the next 2 years, who knows... ---------------- Ohlendorf has been very good at times. He had a messy outing in a game where he came in far too early. I think writing him off is a bit premature. Then again, people have been writing off Ian Kennedy for weeks. hmy: OOPSIE!
I've told you guys all along Kennedy would be a dominating monster. this is just his 1st step to 20+ wins and the cy young.
Well, you know I don't follow the guys in the minors, so I have to defer to you. Do we really have that much talent down there? Do you think Farnsworth comes back at all next year? Honestly, I always thought he had the stuff, he just couldn't get his head right. Now that he's mentally stable on the mound, he's been great. Does his performance this year not earn him another year?
Mark Melancon, JB Cox, and David Robertson could be pitching for the Yankees any day now. Unless Farnsworth is just dominant, one of those guys should take the 8th inning. Melancon's the guy who many see as the future closer. Kevin Whelan and Humberto Sanchez are two others who figure into the bullpen mix in 2009. They both could do it this year (Sanchez is still rehabbing), but there just might be too many people in front of them. If Farns keeps it up, I'd like to re-sign him. Maybe Girardi's what he needs. But if he's terrible, or if he's good and wants setup/closer money, he can be easily replaced. Go to http://www.yankeesprospects.com if you want some stats on these guys and others.
Cool. I always rely on you to give me the info on the young guys. IIRC, the first time I heard of Hughes was from you. Who is that tall dude? I can't remember his name, but he was at Spring Training. I think he might be rehabbing. Will Melancon ever make it here? We've got Mo signed for another few years, and he looks like he can give them all to us. If Melancon is viewed as an eventual closer, is he possibly just trade bait in the near future? Obviously, if Farnsy is terrible, he's toast. A few weeks ago I figured he was done here. Then he threw at Manny, and suddenly he's a different man. I think it's true about him not being liked in the dugout, and that things changed that day. The guy is a total mental case, and I don't doubt that feeling like "one of the team" was enough to straighten him out.
The tall guy is Andrew Brackman. He was their first round pick in 2007. He's out all this year. Melancon obviously wouldn't supplant Rivera (unless Mo breaks down over the next few years), but most people expect him to be the guy when Rivera leaves.
Brackman! Thanks. I remember he's out. Was it Tommy John? Yeah, obviously Mo is the guy. How old is Melancon though? Young enough that he can wait half a decade for his chance? Or will he be that amazing a set up man that he will already be on the team long before he saves a game?
Melancon's 23. Unless the entire bullpen and Robertson (who's a level ahead of him) are all dominant, he might not see time this year. But by 2009 he'll be in the pen and he'll be moved to closer when Mariano is gone (after 2010, unless he changes his mind). Of course, there are so many young guys, Melancon might not end up as the closer, just as a middle reliever. But, because of his stuff, control, and makeup, he's considered the perfect closer type. Some have nicknamed him Joba-lite. And yes, TJ surgery for Brackman.
Watch the development of Hughes, Kennedy, Melky, and Austin Jackson (some of the guys mentioned in trade talks). If in 2-3 years, Santana is still head and shoulders above Hughes or Kennedy, I'd be surprised. Santana still may be a better pitcher, and despite what Olney says, Santana usually is a second half pitcher, so he will likely get better as the season goes on, but a lot of people thought Santana's frame wouldn't let him hold up for entire seasons when he was coming up through the minors/majors. I expect Santana to still be very good, and likely better than our guys, but I don't think he'll be so much better that it was worth not only giving up all that talent for, but also giving him that much money.
