The joke is fans like yourself who want to pretend things like salary cap don't even exist. Then later jump into a Talent vs. Money conversation with some kind of back handed insult to everyone involved. This isn't baseball where owners can spend as much as they want & not give a damn. In the NFL, you pay star players & take the leftover cash to build the rest of your team. And right now there are many holes on this team.
Revis will play out on one season before he signs a deal with injury incentives or for less than what he thinks he's worth. Come on now, let's be real. Love Revis the player, but the person is not a team guy, nor should he be in today's NFL.
Although I disagree with your Herm Edwards example I do understand the point you are trying to make. Back to your point: Teams need playmakers & there's just no way you can be a top NFL team with a roster 100% of slightly-better-than-average guys. However, there's also no way a team can be near the top without overall depth either. Depth+Play Makers is the goal for everybody but with the salary cap you can't maintain this kind of team for long. It's a great argument on who/why/when you let players go because you wanna save the $$ for overall depth. If Cro wasn't there, I'd be opposed to letting Revis walk. I'm also very happy to keep Revis & get rid of Cro, so I hope I'm not giving off an anti-Revis vibe. Instead, I'm hoping to convey an anti- $19,000,000+ starting CB vibe. You can only afford so many superstars on a team. === Let's flashback to only this preseason & remember: - WFH was the starting RT & Jets had no $$ to upgrade the position - Conley was the P & Jets had no $$$ to upgrade the position Jets got very lucky in both positions. As much as the team is struggling now, it would be much worst with those 2 guys stinking it up by playing their usual brand of football. Great talent is needed. But the ability to avoid scenarios where you can't move crap players out of your lineup is also needed. As much as Cro has stepped up, Howard should still be in contention for team MVP ... and Howard is not even close to being a top RT.
I think the Jets need to see how Revis has recovered from surgery, which should be sometime in March through June, before they offer a new contract. I can't see Revis offering an injury discount and if he does, that has to be a red flag. I'm in agreement with the keep Revis or Cromartie but not both camp. Unless the GM can figure out a cap friendly way to keep both, there is too much cap space put on the cb position.
I'll have to see the Jets cut ties with a lot of contracts first before I can even believe they have the green to shell out to Revis, injured or not. And then I'll have to see the draft go in the right direction, with more than half the guys making the roster. Let's talk to him in May if we want to get a "headstart"
I'm sorry but in terms of actually winning football games , he's overrated. Teams like NE , Pitt , Hou would be all to happy for us to spend so much on one player. Great he takes away one player. The Pats still have 3-4 other weapons who we can't defend. Take away Welker , no problem. Try stopping Lloyd , Gronk and Hernandez. Take away Wallace or A.J. , fine. Stop Foster , Brown , Sanders and Daniels. This jets team is built wrong. Who the fuck spends so much on one fuckin position? This team needs to be blown up. Fast.
