I'm thinking of all the currently unemployed coaches with super bowl rings (assuming Lerner wants to go for an established, well-respected name after this debacle), and I think Br4dw4y5ux is right about Cowher wanting no part of a rebuilding process in that division. I bet Holmgren and Shanahan would be similarly savvy.

For some reason though, I have no trouble picturing Jon Gruden jumping right in there.

I guess we know why Pioli didn't want to go into that situation.

If Lerner doesn't like the state of the Browns, he needs to look in the mirror for the answer as to why.

I know that you're especially looking at the last three games, but remember, those teams are also looking at Cleveland as a game they can win. I can see 4 wins total at most, and if that's enough to save Mangini's job then Lerner deserves what he gets.

I think that's clearly the case. He knows they're not going to win this year and someone upstairs probably hinted they wouldn't mind saving a few pennies. I think it makes sense in that if Quinn were their QB of the future, the offense around him isn't going to help him develop into a decent starter anyway. The biggest fault in the QB dept. was not dealing DA when he actually had value. That was a pretty big fuck-up.

What you say about throw his associates under the bus could easily be true, but really, who's to say? I've heard Kokinis wasn't a hands-on GM (..no pun intended) and not a good fit and Mangini wanted him out. If that's the case, then that's probably good for the team. If Mangini's using him to save his own neck, then the Browns are in trouble.

I think the main issue is that Mangini is cleaning house in the locker room and knows he's working with a lot of scrubs who don't know how to play at an NFL level, but it doesn't look like management can comprehend that. It's easy for Rex to say rebuilding is an excuse to play poorly when he inherited a pretty damn good team, but the fact is that to build a good team that can have continued success you usually have to start from scratch. Usually that means some sorry ass seasons. That's what Mangini did here (2006 and 2007) and Rex is now reaping the benefits.

knowing their history - no one.

its beyond a mess. That defense needs 8 new players, the offense is gone of every single playmaker it drafted. Its never going to be a player in FA. Its a coaches nightmare.

The only way they get anyone in there is if they find the best candidate for GM first and then let him pick a HC, and it may not be his friend. Although in the NFL, your friends hire you.

John Gruden?? He's a thought. He'd create a powerful offense, a no nonsense team that's tough. I think the time away from coaching may have helped him too... And personally I want to see Chucky roaming a sideline again.

Cool owner. Probably a little desperate at this point too but still sounds like a cool guy.

Fan: Lerner 'Doing Everything He Can'
BEREA, Ohio -- Die-hard Browns fan Mike Randall made sure he put on his Sunday best for his important meeting with team owner Randy Lerner.

He wore a giant plastic dog bone hat.

The season-ticket holder, aka "Dawg Pound Mike," one of the best known members of Cleveland's rabid bleacher section of fans, spent two hours on Tuesday meeting with Lerner, who stepped away from a turbulent week and his busy schedule for the visit.

Randall and his friend, Tony Schafer, have been encouraging others to stay out of their seats for the opening kickoff of Cleveland's next home game on Nov. 16 to protest the Browns' futility. The fans were scheduled to spend 30 minutes with Lerner but ended up staying much longer.

"It was great," Randall said. "How many owners would spend two hours meeting with two fans? None."

Randall said Lerner was receptive to their ideas for improving the Browns' game-day experience at Cleveland Browns Stadium and even tossed out a few of his own. Randall, who has met Lerner several times, came away impressed with the owner's passion and determination to get the Browns turned around.

"He's doing everything he can to improve the Browns," Randall said. "He wants it to happen -- now."

Lerner's meeting with the fans came less than 24 hours after general manager George Kokinis was removed from his job, the latest upheaval for a franchise that has made the playoffs just once since 1999 and is on its fourth head coach in 10 years.

The camera-shy Lerner has yet to address the circumstances surrounding Kokinis' departure.

Randall said Lerner liked the fans' idea for displaying some of the team's championship banners and retired jersey numbers inside the stadium. Lerner also seemed unaware of the strict security measures in place at the stadium, a zero-tolerance policy that has upset some Cleveland fans.

"He's a fan, just like us," Randall said. "He wants what's best for Cleveland and I believe him. He wants to win."

Randall said he and Schafer are going forward with the "Brown out" protest despite their meeting with Lerner. They will consider canceling it if Lerner agrees to speak to Browns fans, who walked out by the thousands during the second half of a recent home loss to Green Bay.

Randall said he presented Lerner with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt that he felt best summed up his desire to have Browns fans heard.

"It says, 'In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing,'" Randall said. "Randy liked that. We're doing something. So is he."

Cool guy =/= good owner. Dan Snyder is a huge Redskins fan who wants to win now and by all accounts a great guy, but that doesn't mean he knows what's best for the team either.

Are there any challengers for Mangini's claim to be the most disliked coach in sports history?

the team has made awful personnel decisions, orchestrated by Mangini, and is awful on the field, orchestrated by Mangini, so they fire the GM? yeah, that made sense. they may as well have blamed the janitor as well.

Who dislikes Mangini? I love the guy. What he has done for the Jets organization this year ahs been better than the previous three under him.

Well I mean, the janitor probably will soon be the next QB for them so give him time and he will be part of the blame too.

Bobby Petrino, Marty Mornhinweg, Frank Kush, and Lou Holtz were four NFL head coaches who weren't well liked by their players.
