Good point. They should get in their before the f--- Wilpons tear it down. Hopefully, the film will capture what made Namath great. His toughness, his athleticism prior to the knee injuries, and the difficulty of playing QB in the 1960's when WR were mauled from the line of scrimmage all the way down the field. I'm tired of listening to these assholes who tell me Namath was overrated and doesn't deserve to be in the Hall.
Joe Namath is arguably the coolest person in the history of mankind, it would be hard for anybody to accurately portray him. But still, I think they could do better than Jake Gyllenhaal
Namath movie finally getting green light? Jake Gyllenhaal on his dream project — playing Joe Willie Namath Uncategorized — posted by otownrog on May, 8 2010 6:39 AM Discuss This: Comments(0) | Add to del.icio.us | Digg it Jake Gyllenhaal may have a serious film/indie film reputation in his professional life. But the guy likes to break a sweat, literally, and really wants to do that in his “dream project” — a movie about brash, womanizing “Broadway” Joe Namath, whose glory days were with the 1960s and 70s New York Jets. “It’s been a dream of mine, always, ever since I got into the movies, this Joe Namath film biography,” he told me. ” I care about this project a lot and I would be truly honored to get the chance to do that. That’s why I keep answering questions about it, even though it isn’t ready to go. Yet. It’s important to me.” “I know I could pull it off. I think his story’s incredible. I’m in a hurry t get that one up and going, while I still have better knees than he ended up with.” At 29, Gyllenhaal is still young enough to do it, and he has just enough of a a hint of leading man dash about him to pull it off. And he’s athletic — into martial arts and cycling (Lance Armstrong is among his famous friends). He could play Namath from college (You need to cast a good Bear Bryant to cover the Alabama years, maybe a good Howard Schnellenberger, too) to the Super Bowl. He was quarterback in America’s greatest sports city during the height of the sexual revolution. Does Jake G. ooze enough testosterone to pull that off? Would he cover Namath’s downhill slide from that 1969 high? Gyllenhaal also wants to test out his pipes. The musical Damn Yankees “is still in development and I’m still hoping to do it. That’s a tough nut to crack.” What? How so? You train to play baseball, hire a vava-voom to play Lola, get yourself a decent devil (John Malkovich, Hell-oooo) and you’re set. Jake Gyllenhaal To Play Joe Namath? By Doug Norrie: 2010-04-14 17:52:25 Share | NOTE: This information originated in a Los Angeles Times story in which they reported Mangold's attachment but specifically said that Gyllenhaal wasn't necessarily on board. You can read more about it here. Jake Gyllenhaal has escaped catastrophic climate change, fought in the first Iraq war, lived in a bubble and even herded some sheep with his, um friend. Now he might get a chance to play an NFL quarterback. According to Total Film, Gyllenhaal may be moving forward with a long discussed biopic about “Broadway” Joe Namath. James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line) has expressed interest in picking up the film. Mangold, is set to release the Tom Cruise led, secret agent comedy Knight and Day in late June. Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal, starring in this summer’s Prince of Persia, is currently filming Source Code, a sci-fi thriller about government military experimentation. Neither Mangold nor Gyllenhaal has anything in the works after these two projects. Around New York, (especially in the over-50, New York Jets fan sub group) Joe Namath is something of a living legend, a once long haired god among men. He’s most famous for his guaranteed victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The Jets went on to win the game and Namath’s legacy was cemented in The Big Apple.
sure that guy is a great actor.. i'd love to see a movie of joe namath fucking broads aftr games and getting wasted.
The thing that bothers me about Gyllenhall being the guy to play Namath is his voice. He doesn't really come off with the cool "I want to kiss you" voice that ole Broadway Joe has. I'm not sure he has the smoothness to pull the character off. I'm pretty sure that if Joe walked up to a woman on the street and said "panties" she'd be naked in about 3 minutes, I feel like Gyllenhall would be more likely to ask a girl to go out for Italian Ices.
i wonder if they are going to make it like a serious drama with his knees and drinking problems. i think it could be a really good movie. i hope it gets made
Obviously, we're all a bit biased here. Personally, I'm a bit biased AGAINST the movies. In an age of remakes, and crap, It's rare that there's something I want to go out to a theater to spend $$ to see. I'm pretty confident that millions of others feel the same. I wish I was alive during his prime, but his persona lives on, and that's what will draw people to the theater. He wasn't the greatest QB of all time ( or even of his time ) but he was the coolest. The "Anti-hero" in a day of Jonny Unitas guys....... stories like that made the AFL relevant, and that's what makes good movies!
I hope this movie actually does get made and if/when it does I cannot wait to see it on the big screen.
I hope this is a great seventies movie. I want to see mountains of coke, huge natural breasts, wife swapping, loud leisure suits, and gleaming boatlike automobiles. Oh and some great scenes of Jets football too.
I think Gyllenhaal would be a great choice but for fun I was trying to think of some other actors in Hollywood that could work. I came up with Adrian Grenier from Entourage. The guy already has built up that playboy kinda persona as Vince. He was also raised in New York.
i agree gyllenhaal i think can pull it off and since he really wants to do it you know he will be really committed to the role. and it sounds like he is a fellow jets fan. i could totally see grenier playing joe also. he has that look and has a similar build
