Apparently they don't trust Torre with the young pitching staff we will have next year. At least that's what I read into this and it makes a lot of sense with what he has done with the bullpen the last three years and why Guidry won't be back too. "According to a person familiar with the Yankees' thinking, one scenario has Torre returning provided he accept certain conditions. Other possibilities include Torre being let go or simply brought back under a business-as-usual arrangement. Torre, 67, just completed the last year of a three-year deal that paid him $7 million this season." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/10/17/torre.update/index.html
If everbody wants to be fair, AROD should remain in pinstripes; the contract as is should be played out with Texas continuing to contribute their share; and the Yankees should extend him at fair market price for a player of his staure - an additional 10 years at 30 million a year. Its a win-win for the Yankees and Boras/AROD.
Yeah I'm not saying that he's gonna sign with 28 other teams but I was responding to a post that gave the impression that the Yankees were te only team that could give him 30 million a year. The Pirates theoretically could sign him for 30 mill a year but they're not going to. There are plenty of teams I could see shwoing some intrest but in the end it's gonna be the Yankees, Red Sox,Cubs, Angels or San Francisco. I have some friends in the business having worked in minor league baseball and I was told a real dark horse is the Braves. Chipper Jones is up in age and Andruw Jones is not going to be resigned so they're going to be looking for another bat in the lineup with Texiera. I just don't see them sending Chipper packing but stranger things have happend. I was also told that the White Sox might make a serious push as well but I can't imagine how Arod would handle Ozzie Guillen flipping out on him.
The Twins could give him 40 million a year if they wanted...They have the richest owner in the sport...Lose Hunter, probably Johan... They could dish that to ARod, it won't happen, obviously...But the Yankees can be outbid by the Twinkies owner.
You want a real dark horse? Sportscenter is reporting the Marlins could be interested. They can afford it, believe it or not, Arod is from south florida and they are going to get a new stadium.
It appears the Yankees will make a very serious offer to Arod. I see an extension of 7 years that will average around 32 million a year but with the Texas money will cost the Yankees less then 300 million. Of course the media will make a joke of it but they won't be able to say the Yankees gave him a 300 million dollar contract.
Thats not that big of a concern to me because Torre is a complete assclown when it comes to burning out bullpen arms but for starters its not that big of a concern...since we dont actually have anyone in the bullpen, its a moot point
Haha...true, we did though until he burned them out. Maybe they will bring in some new arms and they want to make sure he doesn't do it again.
Not really when you look at the contracts Soriano and Zito got last year and what Santana will surely get this year or next and Zito and Santana only pitch once every 5 or 6 days.
Torre in Tampa - New deal Likely http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7341104 Joe Torre has landed in Tampa, Fla., in what could be the surest sign that a new deal with the Yankees brass is imminent, the New York Post reports. Torre, wearing a dress shirt with sleeves rolled up, departed from Westchester this morning and landed in a private jet at the Hawker Beechcraft Services airport at 1:26 p.m. He was accompanied by GM Brian Cashman and Yankees COO Lonn Trost. They were quickly whisked away in a white Cadillac Escalade to Legends' Field, the Yankees spring training complex, which is just a few minutes away. It is believed Torre will meet there with club president Randy Levine and the Steinbrenner clan. George Steinbrenner arrived at Legends Field at 1:15 p.m.
Because its a business junc. And A-rod is good for business. you have to get out of that lying in your bed staring at baseball cards mentality. Your stats wont teach you about the real world. That stale powdery bubble gum wont teach you any economics. We're talking about a multi million dollar(billion) industry......you know, tickets, tee shirts, television networks etc....its not just about whether he drives in jorge posada with two outs in game 4 of the ALDS. There is a reason that theres a 162 game schedule. Money. People like to go out to the ballpark all spring and summer long and watch this guy swing a two by four and see if the little white ball goes over the fence......he made the ball go over that wall over 50 times this year....and thats why hes getting a raise....and deservedly so
Well, I like this move to be honest. Nobody out there is really better than Joe right now. This could also help the team retain Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera. Plus, this is the final year of the old Yankee Stadium. It is nice that Joe will be managing that team.
Well put and that is exactly what it is about. People have always been in love with the HR. That is what they want to see and it has always been that way. The exact reason why they call the current stadium "The House that Ruth Built". Before him the Yankees couldn't sell 100 seats a game. After he got there they sold out all the time and the money they made from that built the stadium.
yep yep yep....as yankee fans I think we've all gotten to this point where if we dont win a world series the whole season is a waste...its retarded.....if we dont make the playoffs then yeah Id be pissed and say this is ridiculous with the payroll etc.....but once youre in, anything can happen.....but lets not forget about the whole 6 months before the playoffs either
Yeah, my guess is he gets a two year contract and then hands it over to Mattingly. That gives him the last year of the old stadium and the first year of the new one. He will pass all other Yankee managers but McGraw and get his own monument. I guess he won't pass McCarthy either.
Where would they put him? They're not getting rid of Cabrera or Ramirez, unless they move Cabrera back to LF. I wouldn't be completely shocked though, their payrolls only like 14 million, so bring in A-Rod for 30 mil a year would only put them at around 45 million, which is still less than where they were pre-firesale.
