I can totally see that....and Im ok with any idea that brings them along at a reasonable rate.

Santana? Would love to have him...but watching these kids grow would be just as entertaining if not more.

While I am happy about the way the offseason has gone so far with the re-signing of Posada, Arod, Mo (not so much) and Pettite coming back, the team right now is still pretty much the same team as last year.
The one that got off to a horrible start and the one that got bounced in the first round of the playoffs (again.)
So is this offseason considered successful so far even though we havent really improved????

you're forgetting a couple major differences.

    1) Girardi replaces Torre, which probably will equal more fire.
    2) Hughes and Chamberlain (at the moment) will be starting the season with the team. Their youth adds energy to the team and the Yankees record actually increased dramatically when each of them were called up, but I don't feel like looking up the stats.

ok. a managerial change and quite possibly 3 rookies in the starting rotation.....sorry, but that doesnt give me that nice comfy feeling come October.
Also remember that Hughes only got a handful of starts due to injury and Joba had none so to expect that they will both get 30+ starts is a huge leap of faith.
Then again, I dont quite know what I should expect or hope. All positions except for 1st is set.
I guess I would like to see some improvement in the bullpen before I would consider this offseason a success.

Something else to keep in mind:

The team that takes the field Opening Day isn't the same as the one that got off to a slow start.

The one that opened the '06 campaign had Giambi at DH, Matsui in left, and Damon in center. There was also no viable backup to Posada until late in the season.

Now we'll have Damon in left, Matsui at DH, and Cabrera in center. While first is still a "weak" spot, I am highly in favor of Andy Phillips getting the opportunity to show whether he can get it done. At worst, he splits time with Giambi and Betemit. Not too bad.

Plus, our starting rotation is far better, even relying on "rookies", which none of the guys will be. All three kids have proven that they can handle the pressure of a MLB park. Now the only question is whether they can handle the innings. Again, if nothing else, it scraps this year in return for a much improved '09 campaign.

i agree. our rotation and outfield were in shambles at the beginning of last season. Hughes, Joba and Kennedy will be much better than chase wright, rasner, karstens, igawa, desalvo, clippard.

i read that the dodgers put in a 2 year, 32 mill offer to andruw jones. would anyone here do that if we were to trade melky in a deal for santana.
he would be getting paid the same as abreu, we wouldnt be committed long term, he won the gold glove this year, and we wouldnt have johnny damon in center.

I wouldn't. He's another of that growing crop of players just getting by on name recognition.

Then again, I don't really want Santana anymore anyway.

    Hah! Yes! Good job Hank!

Now come on Boston, don't let me down. Do the right thing here and walk away. You'll have the chance next Fall to get him for free too.

I think Theo Epstein and company are probably high-fiving each other now; and Omar is telling the Wilpon's "you know what I mean?, this is what I am talking about".

I probably would but then it's not my money. He had shoulder problems most of last year. I think he will rebound and a 2 year deal is perfect for future plans.

Why? They can't possibly trade him to Boston now. Not unless they add Lester to their current offer. They could trade him to the Mets or a west coast team and I would be fine with that. I'm sure if they did all the sports pages would be reporting it and they aren't. You probably misunderstood. They will pull out if it's not done by tonight.

Dwalsh reported above that Olney reported on ESPN that the Yankees have pulled out. If so, the Twins asking price has to drop. The Twins have to trade Santana in the off-season or risk getting even less on July 31st.

^ Hey look I think Don is nuts half the time but never said he wouldn't be traded just not to the Sox. The Sox are crazy to trade for Sanatna now if the Yankees are truly out of it. There would be no need to.

You miss the whole point. They can't possibly trade him for less then what the Yankee offer was or face a total boycott by their fans who are already pissed to no end. If the Yankees have pulled out, which has been reported nowhere, then they either have to keep him or trade him to a third team for more then what the Yankees offered. Now, if Boston adds Lester to Ellsbury then that is a different story but nobody sees that happening.
