Smith was alright but hes not needed. When he went down against the Colts we didn't seem to miss him, and not at all against the Patriots. And I hated the WildCat imo, it only worked good against the Bungles it seemed Hopefully he will make $$ for some NFC team.
Good for him, however with the new KR rules and his sup-bar abilities as a WR I don't think he'll land a big contract. Maybe Miami... best of luck to him.
Where did you get this stat? I can easily believe he was on the field for 309 plays last season, but I seriously doubt the "majority" was as a WR.
look at week 17 against the bills. Brad Smith ran the ball more than 6 times. I think he had 6 20 yard runs that day.... I have to believe some of the "pass" numbers are him lining up as a qb... also i don't get the addition. He was on the field for 51 offensive snaps (week 17) yet was in for 6 runs, 15 passes and had 30 run blocks. So i have no idea...
6 + 15 + 30 = 51... Also, McKnight had almost all the Jets carries against the Bills... pretty easy to just google the box score for that game if you doubt what I posted.
Spot on!!! I like his energy on special teams, but the wildcat thing is getting old. which at this point would be the only reason to keep him around. I am not a fan of any play that takes the leader off of the field.. If Sanchez is the leader people are saying and or thinking he is, then he needs to be on the field when the Jets are on offense.
yes thank you for doing the math I clearly couldnt... anyways there were 51 plays, if only 6 were runs, how did he run block 30 times? if runs is just plays he touched the ball then why call it 15 pass plays since he didnt catch 15 passes that day? thats what I was talking about. the way its done is not consistent
It's not hard. He was in pass patterns on 15 plays, he ran it himself 6, and he ran block on 30 plays.
What does Smith see himself as? Does he still want to play in the ST / wildcat QB role, or does he see himself as a credible WR? I guess that will determine where he goes and how much he gets paid.
It's not how he sees himself-it's how other teams see him. Wideouts generally makes more than ST specialists and this is Smith's best bet at a bigger contract so it's 99.9% certain he's hoping somebody sees him as a credible second or third WR who can also help in other ways.
How is it not consistent?? He ran the ball 6 times, went out for a pass 15 times, and blocked for the run 30 times. WR's run block when a running play is called if you didn't know.
There's a lot of guys on the team that need to be re-signed or are due to earn some big money. Brad Smith is a great ST player, but I can't see paying him big bucks.
Any free agent that doesn't explore the mkt is nuts. Good for him I hope he gets a huge contract. I don't think he will but best of luck..... As others have said great special teams and trick play guy, not very good as a straight up WR.
I'll run through one of these games tonight on the DVR. I'm still having trouble believing this. My only thought for an explanation is the design of our offense, which often dictates where Sanchez is going with the ball (i.e. quick slants to Homles/Edwards, rollouts to Keller or the underneath receiver, simple QB read order, etc.). If Smith was running all these routes, Sanchez must not have been throwing to him often at all. I can hardly remember any plays where Smith was thrown the ball...
He doesn't get thrown the ball because he's a poor route runner and doesn't get open. His instincts all revolve around already having the ball in his hands. He played QB his whole football career until he came to the Jets, so I suppose he still has time to develop his skills at WR if he spends more time focused on that aspect of his game, but 5 years is a pretty good indication he won't ever be as good as good at the position as this team needs.
I can only imagine how confused you would be if you were a fan of a team who went against Revis. "wait Calvin Johnson ran 37 routes and only caught one pass!? Impossible!"
