So who would you have taken at 9 and 13 instead? The only one that wasn't a reach on offense was Warmack, but you do not have to be a fathead for having a different opinion on him from indepth interviews or having spent a few more hours than you on watching tape. Also Revis quality was the problem, too much money in wrong position, Milliner can be a success without holding out for $16m, like 99% of all CBs in NFL. I do not understand the critisism of Idzik, i believe he, as did i, would have liked for other players to come his way, but he didn't do badly. Our problems are still contacts to Sanchez, Holmes; not this year draft picks.
what a great post +100 there wasn't a single value pick on the offense at #9 or #13 - and when you are in a rebuilding phase you go BPA, we are not trying to slot in one or two final pieces of the jigsaw for a playoff run - we are not doing anything until we sort the QB position and that is not going to happen this year (barring a miracle with Sanchez) - far better to sort the defense, get it loaded with young talent and then when we get our QB of the future next year you get O players that complement their skill set.
And then what happens next year when they draft more defensive players early in the draft? What will the excuse be then? The NFL changes so quickly that you can't afford to completely neglect your biggest need (offense) and think that next year you're going to get who you want. It doesn't work like that. The goal of the draft is to give your team the best chance to win now and build long term depth at the same time. Not to mention one of the guys the Jets drafted has already had 5 surgeries. Huge red flag when you have that kind of injury history before playing in the league. And with the 13th pick there were higher rated D lineman on the board than Richardson. The Jets seem to think they know more than the experts yet it's the Jets who will end up being a complete joke on the field. I agree with your premise on building the defense up however the problem is you really don't know if the Jets will ever address the offensive side of the ball where they need so much help. That's a seriously frightening scenario. We'll see what they do today. I give the picks a C.
when was Jets a joke on the defensive side? Apart from Wilson, who was overdrafted, but by no means a joke, i am more comfortable in Rexs defence than any experts at NFL network.
So what gives your team the best chance to win - taking the BPA because you never know when injuries, trades, other issues might arise, or stretching and taking a player that isn't good value simply because you haven't drafted one of those in a while? People talk about WR but we have Holmes, we have to assume Hill will improve (a guy that was touted as being a first rounder last year) and we have Kerley in the slot. Its not like we don't have any receivers. We need to get a TE but we can address that in the second round. We need a new QB but sadly franchise QBs don't grow on trees as we all know and there wasn't anyone that really stood out. Milliner was fantastic value and fills a need position and Richardson was also good value, is a great prospect and will provide a solid inside rush for the Jets - I would take him over Eifert or a guard any day of the week. I give the draft a B+ and my only disappointment is we were not lucky to find a partner to allow us to drop a few spots and get another 2nd rounder.
I gather you know very little about how Rex's D works. Also take a look at last season. Top team against the pass, bottom third against the run. The first two picks may have solidified our D for the next few years (if Rex stays). You have your corners to keep the pass game in check and you add someone to stop the run that can also get pressure. It makes sense. People just wanted immediate answers on offense instead (with none available). I could be wrong but I feel like there's more than one round in the draft. And I'm pretty sure you don't rebuild in a year. Idzik went the smart and safe route which this fanbase hates. Because it just may have been the RIGHT approach to take.
but, but, but Mel Kiper didn't like it and clearly with his great experience of coaching teams he would know right?
I agree with the few saying that there weren't any good picks for offense at 9 or 13. The thing to me is they picked the position that we are good at right now (DL). I don't mind Milliner because Cronartie most likely will be shown the door next year. But Richardson is different. We have two really young, good players at the position already, and if their planning on rotating them all, it's a waste because there's players later on to fill that. We are not the Seattle Seahawks who are loaded at every position and has the luxury to pick up 3 pass rushers in the offseason.
The media reaction is comical when it comes to the Jets.. Mike and Mike blasting the Jets for a terrible draft, but lauding Minnesota's as 'dominant'. lol, we got the better CB and DT, but they're draft was dominant to ours being laughable? They also gave up the rest of their draft (to NE of all teams) to take a WR i really don't like, while we still have all our picks. The media is too much man.. Staying BPA, not trading up, and not reaching on 'potential' was exactly what most suggested, but still blast it when they do it.
It sounds like you have no idea about how offensive football works. Especially when the biggest need for this team is offense and it's not even close. And I would've definitely taken Eifert over Richardson. Hell I would've taken other D Lineman over Richardson who were rated higher than him. So basically you're saying take BPA even if it doesn't address the biggest need on the team as currently constructed? Sounds like neglecting the obvious to me. And secondly Richardson wasn't even the BPA at the 13 IMO. Rex's track record in drafts isn't very good and their defense isn't supposed to be the primary option to score points. Apparently Ryan thinks it is.
unfortunately, you simply suffer from the same problem that a lot of people do because the media tells them they have to evaluate the draft before the players play a single game, which is about as f'ing stupid as evaluating a meal based on the menu description, not actually how it tastes. there is absolutely no reason to declare the draft a success or failure before a single game is played because the point of the draft is to get players who perform on the field. you can't eliminate that second part -- perform on the field -- and simply evaluate the draft on the first -- get players. the first part has zero meaning by itself.
The BPA approach to drafting isn't uncommon in the NFL, many teams employ it. It's a tried and true practice.
The Vikings had a phenomenal first round. Richardson is better than Floyd? That's debatable. Millner is definitely better than Rhodes but it's all about where you get the guy. Rhodes was projected to go at 12 and they got him in the 20s. Getting Patterson at the end of the 1st was excellent and addressed their most serious need. It's not just about your board. It's about value. We should have just traded down, got more picks and still got a top DT (not that DT was our most pressing need).
Seattle went from a basement dweller to a competitive team in a few years. I think I am going to give Idzik the benefit of the doubt at this point.
It sounds like you're in complete denial about the fact that we are rebuilding. And if you acknowledge that we are rebuilding, and you are in denial that it's more than a one-year process. Revis leaving created a gigantic hole. Why would you not fill a gigantic hole with the best player at that position in this years draft class? I'm not even going to talk about the ninth pick anymore because it doesn't need to be justified. We took the best player on the board at a position we had a hole to fill. As for the 13th pick and taking Richardson over any offensive player or another DT that may have been "ranked" above him... This goes back to you either not understanding of rebuilding or being in denial. You have the rest of this years draft and all of next years draft to address all of your holes and then you can say that phase 1 of your rebuilding is done. We are freaking out after one pick of one round of about 14 rounds that we will be selecting in over the next two years. Remember last year when the Seahawks got laughed out of the building for selecting a guy named Bruce Irvin way too early? Do you remember how Bruce Irvin played this past season? Hey guess what, guess who was in the Seahawks war room when they made that selection? And hey, do you remember who Rex said was number one on their board in terms of pass rushers last year? That's right Bruce Irvin. The point is, fuck rankings. Rankings are created by a bunch of hacks and know it all fans. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe the coaches, scouts and the GM who have been doing this for quite a while know a little bit more than some guy on an Internet message board? As far as Rex's drafting history, look at the last two defensive lineman he's taken in the past two years in the first round. Wilkerson looks like he is on the verge of breaking out and having an all pro season, and Coples definitely progressed as the year went on. I'm not ready to write off Kyle Wilson yet either, because this Dee Milliner pick might allow us to move him to free safety where it looks like he will be way better suited. The point still remains that you are freaking out about not taking offense when we have six more picks to make this year alone. Talk about a knee-jerk reaction.
Mike Mayock's comments on our "value pick" Richardson: "After Sharrif Floyd, this is the most explosive one-gap defensive tackle in our draft."
