The Boyle thing is just an indictment on Shanahan and his logic.......it was a vicious hit but imho not really one that should have been penalized on the ice........however, that being said if Shanahan is basing his punishments on the idiotic formula of whether or not the hit causes injury or not, as he has stated, then there should be a suspension....his application of his own logic is very inconsistent. all the Ranger forwards are guilty of the same thing right now, skating around trying to beat everyone on the outside instead of going to the net...and not winning the battles along the boards like they've been doing all year. Dubinsky is still driving me nuts......he's battling, but his stick is always flying around..........keep your friggin stick on the ice, and maybe you get a chance at poking something in. Gabby and Richards coming up small, maybe that changes with Hagelin back, but i'm concerned he's going to shrivel under the ire of the opposing fans tonight.
I agree, your trying to stop head shots and he has a concussion, he should be suspended, Shanny has no clue...
Not that I wish to defend Shanahan particularly, but I think you're missing his point. He was saying that the extent of a resulting injury will influence the size of the punishment for an illegal hit - if the hit isn't illegal to start with, then there's no discipline to be considered regardless of injury. The injury is an unfortunate by product of a legitimate hockey play. Has Boyle travelled to Ottawa, or is he definitely out?
I'm pretty sure I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen Girardi wind up and take a slap shot from the point. He takes more 60+ foot wrist shots than I've ever seen. But then again, that's not his game. Can't hate on it too much.
Thanks. Lots of talk about Lundqvist, but he's on the ice this morning. Sens are giving a debut to Jakub Silfverberg on the top line with Spezza and Michalek - second rookie debut in as many games. The guy's supposed to be a bit special - 21 year old forward who got the SEL MVP, the SEL playoffs MVP and the Elitserien playoff scoring record (beating Daniel Alfredsson's old record) as his team won the league this season. He's certainly an exciting prospect, but I'm a little concerned about giving a debut to a young player in a game of this magnitude.
Shanny didnt say the only criterium is if an injury results. He said that would be taken into consideration while handing out suspension. The original hit still has to be illegal for him to review in the first place.
Doesn't matter, this makes a mockery of their rules & suspensions process. If they're trying to clamp down on head injuries, they have to come down hard on this. Instead the guy gets off with no penalty and the Senators have permission to do whatever they want for the rest of the series and know they won't get punished
listen, to me the resulting injury should have no impact whatsoever on punishment.. too confusing and inconsistent, the intent of the player should be, and anyone who watches enough hockey knows if someone is hitting with intent to injure..particulalrly when there is history involved..that's what the criteria for suspensions should be, not on hitee's ability to sustain the hit without injury. It's just dumb logic and bad precedent......if Hossa got up and continued to play from that Torres hit, should Torres have been suspended for less time? It's just dopey. I guess that's what I'm getting at.
What part of it being a perfectly legal hit are you struggling with here? Yes, Chris Neil and the Senators have permission to go and make another hundred of those hits and not get punished. So do the New York Rangers.
don't be too much of a homer about it. I'm willing to concede that it was borderline enough not to be called a penalty.........but Neil was obviously head hunting and fortunate that Boyle was lowered enough where he could get away with it. Let's not be that naive to say otherwise.
Right, it was very much on the borderline of legal - half a second later and it would probably have been ruled illegal, and rightly so. Point is, injury's irrelevant when the hit is legal - it's a linear decision process. I do agree with you that the victim's ability to absorb the blow shouldn't be the arbiter of how heavily it's punished, but I do think that the more catastrophic hits should at least take into account the impact upon the opposing team and player, especially in the middle of a seven game playoff series.
well I'll continue to disagree with you on the hit as I go back and watch the clip that you posted of it......I don't care where the puck was, that was a perfect example of a hit with intent to injure......going after the opposing player's head, regrdless of whether he had the puck or not. Like I said the only thing that saved Neil from a penalty and suspension is the fact that Boyle had his head down at a level where Neil could hit it and leave some doubt in the refs mind for that split second.....the glass or the ice certainly didn't cause the concussion, the hit did. Anyways, beating a dead horse, hopefully my team gets some payback either on the scoreboard.....or if we're down and out, someone drills Alfie again ; )
