that was my first thought as well.

its as if its the middle of the season and are they seriously looking into a possible quarrel between the two battling QBs.

    1 - 10 of 99Camp Cortland (Day 5)
6 m ago By Roderick Boone

Even though today marked the first day of full contact since they were practicing goal line and short yardage plays, it was a rather non-descript practice this morning as the Jets finally got to play on the grass field the organization had installed.

Let the record show that S Kerry Rhodes recorded the first 'real' tackle of training camp when he took down Thomas Jones. But neither side of the ball was dominant, although I think the offense might've gotten the best of the defense from what I saw of the goal line drills.

There were a couple of nice naked bootlegs, including one where Kellen Clemens faked out the entire defense -- even Rhodes, who slipped into the backfield -- and sprinted left into the end zone.

But all the top honchos in the organization who were watching were likely gasping when they saw Clemens take off on a bootleg to the right side with LB Bart Scott almost ready to hand Clemens his head on a silver platter.

"Like I told the rook, 'Man, that's a bad career decision because once you roll out, I might blank out and I don't know what the red jersey means sometimes,' " Scott said. "If you come towards me, I'm going to come towards you. But I blinked back into reality and I jumped out the way."

Sanchez dove for the pylon, but came up short anyway.

"I had a touchdown for sure," Sanchez said. "Naw, he was just giving me a hard time. But he coached me up on it after, too, told me what to expect and make sure I get low and protect myself and obviously go for the end zone as well. So it's good to have guys like that on the team who give you a little razzing here and there, but then at the same time they'll help coach you."

I kept my eye a bit on Vernon Gholston during the initial goal line drills and there was one time when TE Kareen Brown pushed him off the ball and they ran right at him with FB Jehuu Caulcrick for the TD.

But VG came back on the very next play and put a nice move on Brown to help force Sanchez to throw the pass before he wanted to. So, there still appears to be a little inconsistency on Gholston's part.

    **************************************************

Injury-wise, FB Tony Richardson has a hip pointer and will be sidelined for a few days. He was hurt on the second play of goal line drills after Clemens made a beautiful play-action fake. Richardson beat LB Bart Scott and dove into the end zone.

S Keith Fitzhugh's MRI revealed a left rotator cuff bruise. He had his left shoulder in a sling while riding the exercise bike. Ryan said the injury is painful, but he will be fine.

"I really feel fot that kid," Ryan said. "I told him earlier in the day [before he got hurt Monday], 'You really came here to make this team, didn't you?"

Rookie RB Shonn Greene (ankle) also was pedaling the stationary bike.

DE Shaun Ellis still has general soreness in his hip, bjut Ryan said it's nothing that really would keep him from playing.

    **************************************************

Daily QB Meter: Remains at one in favor of the vet. There wasn't much throwing going on in the morning session, but Sanchez did make a critical mistake during one session where they were simulating the clock hovering near the two-minute mark.

Rather than do a quarterback slide and stay in bounds, he threw the ball at the feet of a receiver, which stopped the clock. Only thing was, in the simulation, the team was ahead and they were trying to kind of run down the clock under two minutes so the opponent had as little time left as possible if they were to get the ball back.

Yes, like any rookie, Sanchez still has a lot to learn.

Again, there wasn't much passing going on so we'll update this after the afternoon practice, which begins at 4:15 p.m.

    **************************************************

    Spoke with Kareem Brown today.

When I asked Rex Ryan about his progress yesterday, he mentioned that Brown was had been going dealing with some personal issues.

So I wanted to ask him specifically about what he's been going through and it's a tough situation, really. Things have been difficult for him over the last five days or so after witnessing his friend get killed in a car accident in the early hours of last Thursday morning. He was driving in a car behind his friend when his friend lost control of his car and was killed after his car was wrapped around a tree.

I'll have more in tomorrow's paper and here on newsday.com.

    **************************************************

And now ... the Rex Ryan Comedy Hour:

Today marked Day 5 of Ryan's new diet and he's looking forward to finally being able eat something whole rather than the all-liquid intake he's been on. Tomorrow morning's breakfast will consist of Cheerios and skim milk. That sounds perfectly yummy to Ryan, who said he's never looked so forward to a having a simple bowl of cereal.

But it hasn't been all that bad, right?

"Besides almost passing out," Ryan said, "I feel fine."

    **************************************************

Be back with a shortie after the next practice.

I didn't know where to put this so I'll do it here.

Rex Ryan was practically gushing about Gholston in his press conference today. It's available on newyorkjets.com.
