Mac didn’t fail because he took defense in the first round of most of his drafts, he failed because he could not find talent outside of the first round. Same with idzic and tanny after 07 . You can’t just call for offense in the first round and ignore talent . If okuda was to fall to us at 11 there’s no chance he is not the best player on the board and the fact that the last gms took defense in the first should have no bearing on taking him. To act like it would be a bad pick is just something I can’t wrap my head around.
Evaluate talent, yes and if he does correctly okuda would be the pick. What his predecessors have done, no bearing. If they knew how to pick players the job wouldn’t have been open to begin with. One player on one side of the ball does not make or break the whole draft.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-2020-nfl-mock-draft-20-patriots-take-herbert Now this is exactly what we don't want. Take a good (not great) cornerback prospect who had a good combine because corner is a need. Especially with Jeudy and Lamb on the board.
I'm going to end this particular discussion because you keep going places and suggesting that I said things that I never said. Obviously, we are diametrically opposed in how we view the draft, and I don't think anything positive can be gained by continuing this discussion.
Of course he failed because he took defensive linemen so much in the 1st round. He built a roster that is flawed, flawed rosters have a hard time winning
I think we can all agree that's a bad idea. Shocked that Jeremiah would have us take him even if it's only a mock draft.
If flawed means lack of talent I agree. It’s not that he took defensive players in the first it’s that they didn’t live up to the draft spot paired with missing on too many other picks.
All these arguments are passionate and valid. Be it drafting for need versus talent or drafting offense versus defense are topics that have effectively eluded our prior GMs. Quite frankly, at this point, my biggest hope is that JD breaks the poor drafting streak that has haunted us forever. What I want is a GM that has far more hits than misses in all the key rounds, captures football talent that makes our team better, and cleverly balances all the positions by building a sustainable pipeline. I do believe he has his priorities and critical needs for this year in focus,1) OL,2)pass rusher3)WR/CB. I don’t think he will over reach for a OL or any position. IMO, he most likely try to trade down if no one of need is meritorious of the round. We can ill afford anymore major busts in key rounds. Players that never get to see the field like Polite or many others considered a “risk worth taking”. That BS needs to stop with this draft.
He's very raw and a bit limited. Not necessarily because of who he is as a receiver or an athlete, but because he simply was not asked to do a lot of different things in college. That UCF system sends those outside receivers on short 4-5 yard stops, fly routes (most of the time in Davis's situation) and your occasional deep crosser. He's very good down the field at tracking the ball and fast as hell. That's not to say he can't be good receiver but he just hasn't done a lot of things in college that he'll be asked to do at the professional level. Not a guy that's going to come in and instantly start moving the chains.
I might've jumped the gun a bit. Still, I like his upside. He cannot be counted on to be our top WR in 2020, but in 2021 and beyond, that should change.
