Oh there's something to be learned alright. And that is that nothing has changed w/ this franchise. This was your typical soft, playing scared on the road effort that we've seen this team subject to since the Herm era. Defense gets off to slow start while offense comes out flat. By the time they get their feet underneath them they're down 3 scores & lack the playmakers on both sides of the ball to close the gap. This team needs to completely change up how they handle road games. Enough of this playing scared & playing not to lose. All that equates to is getting beat off the snap, not being physical & not having even the slightest bit for firepower to change the outcome. To me that was the worst part about this loss. We've seen this same crap so many times before.
Everyone has to remember, this is a VERY good team playing at home. Homefield advantage worth 3 points? Not yesterday! If you looked in the stands there wasn't anything green to be seen... anywhere. And if you choose to live in freaking boring Cincinnati, Ohio, you've got nothing better to do with your time than go to the stadium on Sunday, get drunk as hell, and make a lot of noise. It beats going to WalMart or all-you-can-eat Big Bob's Barbecue Ribs out on Route 482. There's nothing else going on in Cincinnati, Ohio, believe me. So yes, this was a hostile environment. Then you have two freakishly quick scores to fuel it. Average coaching, IMO, but a really good defense, now supercharged. On the other side of the ball, Dalton, with a lead, playing almost flawlessly confident football. And 9 guys catching passes! Our defensive backfield sucks. Milliner is not the answer. Cro is getting old on us now. The rest are fill-ins. But give their O-line plenty of credit... these guys gave Dalton all the time he needed to pick our DBs apart like a cooked chicken. Offensively, did we get the "Ground and Pound" going? Well, no... because their DEF really stuffs the run very well and besides, we're behind now, so when you do let Geno air it out you have a 50-50 chance of a turnover. So you keep it inside with the short shit and even that doesn't generate 1st downs. They get the ball back and score again. We get the ball and we're lucky with 3 points. They get the ball and it's 7 more. I hope I'm wrong, but Sunday is going to be a real bitch. At least we might break our streak - W-L-W-L-W-L-W-L... and this time another L.
This game reminds me a lot of the game last year between the Jets and Colts. Luck came in and played horrible, turned the ball over 3 times and the Colts got killed 35-9. Rex feasts on rookie quarterbacks. It was a bad matchup for Luck. I'm not trying to compare Geno to Luck or the Jets of 2013 to the Colts of 2012. But the point i'm trying to make is that going up against good defenses, or great defensive minds can always be really tough for rookie QB's. This game wasnt lost just because of Geno but it's just important to remember when evaluating a player.
Post of the year.......it's nice seeing that somebody understands the whole picture. It's one game.....right smack in between a win against the Pats and Rex's brother coming into town - a letdown.
Yep and it reminded me of a 41-0 drubbing in Jacksonville back in 2006.......a year looking to be very similar to this one.
we all know that this is rebuild year one. it took seattle at least 3 years to accomplish the same thing. we need olbs, safeties, wrs with speed . not going to get done overnight. besides, the bengals were probably advised that the jets were vulnerable on deep passes by their practice squad qb who did exactly the same thing during his time running the scout team, and during the green-white scrimmage at training camp.
I wish Rex could learn to quit deferring. Especially against a high powered offense. He is such a shitty HC.
What we'll learn is just how much heart this team really has. That will be shown on the field this upcoming game against another contender and this time, they'll be up against a future HOF'er as well. This team isn't a stranger to getting it's ass kicked badly. Rex usually can get the team motivated enough to play better the following game. They had a letdown this week and it's real easy to see another loss if this team doesn't pull together. We won't win in a shootout. This game will be about Rex vs. Rob and who's defense is better. The Jets should be ready to play just to erase the embarrassment if nothing else. Memo to Rex: You haven't been extended yet so Step it up Coach. Can't have too many more of those kinda games this year.
I mean if the offense is going to go 3 and out to start a game, it's not going to change much if you defer or receive.
You should always defer when you win the coin toss. Statistically, the team that receives in the second half has about a 53% chance of winning - regardless of who won the coin toss. If you receive in the second half, you have the possibility of getting two possessions in a row without needing a turnover. If you end up scoring at the end of the half, you then immediately get the ball back in the second half, automatically. On the flip side, it completely eliminates the opponent's chance to get those two possessions in a row without a turnover. Then when you factor in the defense, starting off the game with your best unit on the field is a good thing. Obviously the Jets' defense is better than its offense, and therefore it's more likely to be successful- so by deferring you have a higher chance of having a successful first series (on defense) and then try to build off of that. If you have a lousy defense, and a good offense, then you might want the ball first because you're afraid of immediately falling behind. But because deferring gives you the chance of having almost a free turnover, it's better to give than to receive. Rex's decision to defer is sound.
I've thought this for years and its a tactic I use in Madden (yeah I know :wink Baffles me why so many teams don;t do this.
Rex needs to watch the tape of this game and take remedial action. Yeah, the points differential was a one-off but Sunday was a masterclass blueprint of how to beat the Jets.
It really doesn't matter this year. We all like to win, but , the reality of it is we are rebuilding, and do it it properly takes time which a lot of fans will not tolerate, get ready for FIRE REX threads by the intolerant. This......
Deferring is the right thing to do. It does not cost you a possession because the two halfs are discrete time periods and do not meld together in any way in terms of possessions. Deferring is your only chance to get two possessions back to back and a two score swing at the end of the first half and then beginning of the second. Nobody else does this consistently right. Rex does it right. Rex is doing a very good job this year so far. He, Marty Mornhinweg, Dennis Thurman and the rest of the staff are making lemonade out of lemons and I for one am appreciative of watching a 4-4 rebuilding team that has already beat the Pats and won a big primetime game. Editing to say, just read this: And he put it better than I could. Excellent post.
Thats coaching. And they aren't doing it. My 15 year old, and FWIW my 8 yearold, know to catch with your thumbs together, unless your taking one over the shoulder Your last two pics make the point. In the Buffalo picture he's facing the damn ball.
