For the record I doubt he'll play here, but let me play Devil's advocate real quick. Holmes, Braylon, and even Harris, are much easier replaced then a true shutdown corner. They are good players, but Aso is great. Finding a good WR or a tough, hard hitting MLB can be found in the draft.
How is Brad Smith still so underrated by some of you guys? Pay attention on kick and punt coverage. He's our best special teamer. In an evolving league, Brad Smith is a valuable weapon. The Wildcat has been working pretty well lately. I doubt he'll be a Jet in 2011 because some team will overpay him.
It would be awesome to have him, but it won't happen. Too much money would be invested in two secondary positions.
I don't underate him. I just think Cro filled in nicely for him in the KR game. If in fact he wasn't a Jet next year it wouldn't be huge issue. I don't like when the wildcat is being implemented.
Tanny won't leave any stones unturned....I'm sure he'll make the phone call. But Aso's asking price will be ridiculous, so i'm pretty sure there's nothing to see here.
The Lions should definitely make a serious run at him. It would accomplish a ton of issues. When was the last time they shelled out money for a big time free agent? CB is their biggest need. It would free up their draft for other pressing needs. It would give some early cheer to Calvin Johnson & show him that the organization is making a concerted effort to improve.
If he's replacing Cro, thats completely fine. But if he's asking for more the Revis money I say fuck that. I think the teams he may most likely end up in are either the Chargers, Cowboys, or Saints. Chargers because of his Cali connections, Cowboys because of the need and money, and Saints because of his birthplace in Louisiana. All win now situations.
I'd love to have Aso but there's just no realistic way of him coming and staying. If we would get him, Cro would have to be our nickel which he wouldn't be ok with. Aso is not gonna play safety either. He's a CB. He's still relatively young. That being said I would LOVE to have him even if it means not having Brad Smith and Braylon Edwards. We NEED Harris and Holmes though. Also, I can't see us kicking Cro out but if it means getting Aso then I'd be fine with it. I just don't see the point when we need a S, DE, DT, and OLB.
So even crazy al realizes how ridiculously foolish that contract was for a corner. Its a good thing revis and his douche agents held out with that as a baseline. Maybe he wont hold out again after he gets his two 16 million seasons now.
Most people might think it's crazy to pay 2 corners like that but I say no. I think signing Aso to pair with Revis makes Revis' contract more worth it. Lets be honest, as great as Revis is it's not like our secondary is shutting people down. They just throw everywhere but Revis. You get both of those guys and they make each other better. They may actually get some passes thrown there way which makes everyone on defense better. You just can't completely ignore your 2 best receivers all game. The contract is another story. If he really wants to play with Revis he can take a little bit less. When Aso was on ESPN 1st take before the season and he was praising the Jets and how he'd love to play for a coach like Rex. Ask yourself this. Which off-season acquisition makes the most impact on the team? Aso and Revis will make each other better. Draft a pass rusher in the 1st round, sign Holmes or Braylon, hopefully find a way to re-sign Harris, let one of the WR's and Cro go. Maybe Smith too if you can't keep him. Sorry for the long post but the idea just excites me.
There are so many things that will happen between now and next year, it's pretty fruitless to make any predictions at this time.
I actually 100% agree with you and if this is really what happened I'd be thrilled. Then in the 3rd round we could take BPA WR/DL.
If this was Madden 2011 I'd be all for it. No way I would invest 30 million/year for two corners. This team will have enough trouble signing Harris, Holmes, Edwards, and Cro.
