willie says that glavine is "chomping at the bit" to pitch tomorrow. obviously the manager isn't going to say that the team wants a rainout, but i can't believe that about glavine. when they asked him after game 1 about pitching on 3 days rest he hemmed and hawed about "being ready".

I think they should pitch Steve Trachsel tomorrow and hope for the best. Worst case scenario we have Glavine fully rested at Shea one game down. Best case scenario we have him with the potential clincher at Shea. Don't throw our best pitcher out on short rest when it's not a must win game.

no i'm serious. I know Trachsel was AWFUL yesterday, but he only pitched 1.somethin innings. If he sucks again, we probably lose, but we go back to Shea with Glavine on full rest. You think it's a horrible idea? why?

Well, he's supposedly injured, and besides that he's absolutely terrible. We saw this guy have a mental breakdown on the mound last night and you want to put him back out there?

Tom realizes the importance of game 5 and that he is our MVP.

I hadn't heard that he's injured. Maine looked awful as well.

Here's the way I see it. If we put Glavine out there tomorrow without full rest he probably isn't going to have his best game. If we lose with him on the mound we have to win 2 in a row with Maine and Trachsel as our starters. I don't like our chances there.

If we put Trash out there tomorrow and lose, we get Glavine on full rest, then roll the dice at home for game 7 and go to the pen early and often if necessary.

Game 5 is the more important game. It's looking like the Mets may catch a break and get rained out tomorrow and make all of this moot. If the Mets lose Game 5 with Glavine they're probably finished but if they win then they've just got to figure out a way to eek out a win in 2 home games.

I'll be doing my rain dance tomorrow.

edit: Saying game 5 is more important is like saying it's more important to take the lead with a FG against Peyton Manning and the Colts. Sure you can attempt the FG with Nuge, but it's not too hard for Manning to score a TD against our D.

    edit2: I'm going to bed.

That's a strange analogy to say the least. I think its pretty clear that any benefit gained from waiting until Game 6 to pitch Glavine would be severely outweighed by the fact that you'd be throwing Trachsel in Game 5. If the Mets were up 3-1 at this point I agree that it would be pretty ridiculous to pitch Glavine on 3 days rest, but it's 2-2.

What you're saying is the equivalent of being on defense in a tie game with 2 minutes left and saying, "Let's let up a touchdown on the next play so we have more time to score our own touchdown."

It must be nice to have an offense that comes through when it's needed most. Remember all the times I said Met fans were jealous of the yankee success and you guys denied it? I can admit I am jealous of what you guys are doing. This team has 1 quality SP(and it's a guy who has struggled in the past in postseason but he's pitching great this postseason) and you are finding ways to win. I admire that and you have a fun team to root for right now. Good luck getting these final 2 games.

I wouldn't pitch Glavine tonight. The Mets are in a best of three with 1 solid starter. They have to ensure that he is primed for that 1 start. I agree Trachel should never pitch again but the best way to ensure that is to pitch Glavine in game 6. I would do something nuts like start Heilman tonight.

    Very gracious comments.

As to your other point, I denied it then, I deny it now, and I will deny it tomorrow. For me, jealousy doesn't even remotely come into it. I root for my team, and if they don't succeed, I curse once or twice, and I move on. If a team I don't like succeeds, I curse once or twice, and I move on. It would never occur to me to be jealous of another team's fans, since there is no "skill" that I wish I had in rooting for a good team (which would really lead to envy, rather than jealousy, and which is what I believe you're talking about), and another team doing well isn't a threat to my "relationship" with a team (which is what jealousy is actually about). Not being happy about the way a game ends up is not the same thing as being envious of people who are.

What I said at the time still holds - just because you feel a certain way, that doesn't mean that other people do.

Jelaousy may not be the right word, obviously I don't want to be a Met fan but i wish my team was still playing and in years where we made it and you didn't you can't say you didn't wish your team was still playing.

anyway, I don't want to get off topic. i haven't really posted much on baseball since our debacle in Detroit so enjoy the the rest of the playoffs.

Hopefully it rains today and makes this moot, but I think Game 5 is the must win. Going back to NY up 3-2 going against 2 starters that have been horrid on the road this season and a bullpen that is suddenly looking like it should and the Mets offense is good enough to win 1 of the 2 games.
