Great point, worthy of the post. Obviously I was only referring to the exact millisecond that two former players were on the field and not at any point since.
I thought they blitz a fairly good amount of times The problem that i saw was that the blitzes were predictable If i could figure out who was coming on a blitz, most of the time, i'm pretty sure a QB who watches hours and hours of game tape could the same as well
it doesnt matter what you do, if you do it over and over and over again people will adjust to it. thats what happened to the defense.
Lots of good posts in this thread. I really liked Zach's take on Wilson and pattern matching. I think that the thing that really worked for the Jets in 2009 and hasn't worked as well since is heavy pressure applied from unexpected angles. The Jets actually had good pressure from the usual sources until Kris Jenkins went down. Jenkins and Shaun Ellis got penetration fairly often and collapsed the pocket causing fast and often unwise decisions by the QB. After Jenkins went down the interior pressure vanished and Rex had to improvise and he expanded on the edge blitzing he was already doing until the blitzes were almost comical to watch. I don't think ramping up the blitzing again is going to have a similar effect. As others have pointed out the answer to the heavy blitzing is to go max protect with late-releasing TE's and RB's to function as outlets. I'm hoping the Jets blitz a normal percentage of the time because they're getting decent pressure out of the linemen. If they can do that then we're looking at another top 5 defense and some upside potential on the year.
Our offense is pretty uncertain again this year so I expect our defense to be on the field most of the game. If we can fly around and stick some people, at least it will still be entertaining to watch.
I would rather rarely blitz and get the heat from our front 4. That said we have not had a decent pass rush in years so we MUST blitz to make up for our lack of rush. Every year we have hoped for a good rush and sadly it has not been there. The last decent pass rusher we had was Abe and before that was a long time,,that is sad. Hopefully this all changes this year--time will tell
Shaun Ellis was a decent pass rusher. From 2006 to 2010 he averaged 6 sacks a year mainly working from the strong side end position in a 3-4. That's like 12 sacks a year from the weak side in a 4-3.
the thing with rex is he is going to blitz.pass rush or no pass rush. he could have derrick thomas lawrence taylor warren sapp and kris jenkins and he is still sending the safety and maybe a cb.he doesnt care about if his guy can beat the block its all about getting the free rusher. and he always fields a good defense so its hard to argue against.
We don't have explosive edge rushers to rush 4 and think well apply pressure Our defense is going to Eat the pocket and get the QB on the move and finish him off on the edge with our secondary playing a huge role We're not the Giants or Seahawks
Thanks Zach... Rex has said in the past that there is no better pressure than up the middle. It took Rex 3 full drafts to replace Jenks.... Can someone add the other vid of Jenks tossing Mawae like a rag doll? This ain't a Jenks post really, it's a 'pressure up the middle' post.
Pretty sure this isn't the one you're talking about but still impressive. He got to Chris Johnson before he could even change direction. Up the middle was like a straight shot to him.
Regardless, this is definitely the most athletic defense Rex has had as Jet coach. Davis and Sapp/Barnes instead of Scott and Thomas (and maybe Pace). Ellis and Wilkerson in their 3rd seasons. Coples and Harrison in their 2nd seasons. Richardson added to the mix as well. Putting a lot of faith in some guys who haven't proven it on a consistent basis, but there is more than enough there where the Jets should look good at all those positions this season. Yes, Revis is gone, but Milliner is here, so while that's obviously a downgrade, we should have a very capable replacement. Revis and Cromartie have never been completely dominant as a duo anyway (Cromartie's game stepped up to elite last season, after Revis's injury). I'm glad Rex is focusing on the defense. That's the Jets' best chance of competing this season, if the defense can be top 3. If the defense is top 3, and the Jets go from turning the ball over 37 times to 25 times, that's a couple of wins right there.
Only problem was in 2009/2010 we blitzed SO MUCH we sometimes had coverage blown - ultimately having big plays from the opposing offense surface - Yes, while it did help we had a Revis out there to hold the big plays from happening when we blitzed sometimes it was unavoidable. This year we will have to be unpredictable when blitzing and smart about it can't just go in there and blitz on 3rd down EVERY game and not expect a big play if we can't get to the QB in time.
