Yes everyone plays with 3 wide sets. However, 3 wide and more sets are the foundation and life blood of the Jets passing game.

Using the Pats as an example is tough, because ya know...Tom Brady.

Show me a trio of wide receivers in the NFL that all make $8 million or more.

Show me why that matters. What matters is what puts the jets over the top while setting up the future

Well you answered why your statements are incorrect. Alshon Jeffery sets us up for cap hell while neglecting other areas of the team that really need help next season. That's a Tannenbaum go all in to win the Superbowl next year signing.

Our schedule will get tougher no doubt.
I can't blame all of our missing the playoffs on him, but even after our midseason slump (many things caused that to happen), none of that would have mattered if he doesn't throw picks on our season's last possessions.
I don't see him getting close to the season he just had, if he comes back.
Mac shouldn't invest big money in him that's for sure. Our WR's made more plays for Fitz (making him look better than he is), than he made throws to them.
Decker in the slot, surrounded by two quality WR's shouldn't be interpreted as a slap in the face to the Decker crowd. Turk hit it on the head, atleast he understood my intent. Also Decker had periods where he disappeared, so how is he suddenly the best #2 in the league? He is a possession WR, nothing else. If we have a better #2 than him, that would make him the best #3 in the league by a good margin. Our passing game would definitely move forward.
Fitz would have more open targets, and his completion % would move up more.
There is no way in my opinion that having a better #2 than Decker, could be a bad thing.
Unless Decker fanboys can't stand the idea of their boyfriend being demoted. Lol
I happened to learn to like Enunwa, Thompkins, and Smith. However, none of them played at a consistent level, and it hurt the team.
Having Amaro this past year would have been nice, but we didn't.
A quality RB will also help our passing game, as long as he can Run and catch, while also playing every game, unlike Ivory who I personally like.

Not sure how I answered my own question. By stating we should make moves that put us over the top now as well as care the future? If you are in favor of neither, and assume cap hell by drastically overpaying everyone (Tannenbaum), then what exactly are you going for? 8 - 8 and 10 - 6 in perpetuity with a few 4 and 6 win seasons mixed in?

signing a guy like alshon isn't neglecting other areas of the team. he isn't calvin Johnson and won't get nearly that kind of money. He would get JUST about the same as Decker maybe a tick more, and could be structured differently to accommodate our projected cap as the team builds.

we can sign alshon, keep moe, re-sign fitz, and Harrison and then turn to the draft (ya know to address team needs). as we should.

There is no more worthy a FA prospect than a guy like Alshon who is young, faltered his contract year driving his market value down, and is familiar in working with your current top of depth chart player at the position. It's frankly beyond a no brainer.

You are delirious. After cutting Cro, Kerley and Cumbie, we'll have 16 roster spots that need filling. Minus 2 that don't count against the cap = 14. Minus 6 from the draft = 8. Sign Ashton, Mo, Fittz, Snacks = 4.

    Current cap room 10.2 m. 3 cuts = 21.3m cap room. Sign Mo (15 m), Fitz (8 m), Snacks(5 m), Ashton(9 m) alone = 37 m. That brings us into the red cap wise to the tune of 15.7 m. We still have 6 rookies (5-7 m?) and 4 empty roster (3-4 m?) spots to pay for. That's approx 25 m OVER the cap.

So once again, please wake up and smell the coffee. And please don't tell me that restructure can fix this.

except for the fact that restructures can and will fix it. where are you getting the $9 mil number from for Alshon in that scenario?

There's no way Alshon signs for any less than $10 million a year. He's better, bigger and younger than Vincent Jackson was and he got over $11 million a year. It's just not feasible to tie nearly $30 million into 3 wide receivers. It doesn't work.

Im not sure I agree with him getting that kind of money. Vincent Jackson was a proven veteran commodity with a clean and consistent track record. Alshon is a guy who had 1 good year than battled extensive injuries. It's not a fair comparison. Alshon can ask for that much but on this contract I don't see him getting it. Likely to sign with a decently sized signing bonus, less guaranteed, but incentives. Could get Golden Tate numbers with a bit of an uptick in guaranteed money given his physical advantages.

If a team overpays obviously the Jets can't afford it. But I don't think the #s being assumed are going to be the #s he ultimately gets.

Decker had a touchdown in most games. I remember him struggling when Marshall was banged up and the oline was getting dominated, but based on TDs, Marshall was tied for #1 in the league, while Decker was #6. Decker had more TDs than Gronk in the same amount of games. This is not a position of need and the Jets should not invest much here. In fact, I'd say they should invest nothing here except a possible draft pick.

If anything, sign/draft/develop a TE to compliment the WRs, but a 3rd WR making good money is a waste because Decker and Marshall have been so productive and #3 WRs are a dime a dozen in the draft. I'm much more worried about the oline, signing RBs, signing Fitz, figuring out the Wilkerson/Harrison situation, and getting pass rushing LBs. Those are much more important to our short term and long term success. Adding another WR will detriment the team overall because it will ensure the D goes to shit over the next few years and all the best FAs walk. That won't put the Jets over the edge to win a super bowl, it will create a boom or bust year, and nobody wants that.

The only time signing Alshon would have made sense would have been last year ... (ton of space ... no receivers) this year with so many holes and positions to fill he makes no sense what so ever ... not to mention we will have no money to sign him. focus on ILB OLB and OL in the draft and for the love of god a PUNTER !!

If we were void of WR talent, I could see Macc pulling the trigger (see Revis).

But before signing up an expensive WR like Alshon, Macc may wait to see how his offense does with Amaro and Devin Smith back, plus a more experienced Enunwa. Macc may prefer to spend what little dough he has left on a good RB or RT.

Tight End doesn't matter. It's not that we didn't use TE because we didn't have one, we didn't use Tight End bc it doesn't have a role in Chan Gailey's system (such as been the case on all Chan Gailey teams). So grabbing a TE or thinking we're going to utilize one is not thinking within the system.

People really need to stop thinking in terms of #1, #2 and #3 WR. That doesn't exist in this system. Enunwa played a CRITICAL role in this offense, and while he flashed the system needs more. Why not go all in, and be the best at it. Having that additional and stronger passing option no doubt puts the Jets in the playoffs last year. Plus, we are a hit or non-contact injury to Marshall/Decker away from falling on our faces. It's obviously not popular opinion, but this is an absolute no brainer to me.

Alshon is just the name being discussed. He's not the one and only, but I think grabbing another strong WR is a top 3 priority for this team.

    So agree to disagree.

We are going to have to make a choice on the OL. You just cant find replacements for three prime OL in a draft (esp at 20.) But there is nothing wrong with being stuck with Brick one more year and look for replacements for Winters and Breno. Gosh Breno was terrible last year.

Yes, future of OL is a big deal. Drafting OL this year and next would be a good idea. We have 2 more years left from Brick and Mangold if I had to guess, before we start seeing a fall off.

Um, we started seeing a fall off from Brick a couple years ago.

I'm aware of that. I'm referring to the point he is no longer viable. Yes, he's DECLINED, but he has by no means FALLEN OFF. He's still a viable starting LT. 1 - 2 years and that ship will have sailed.

Plus by cutting him this offseason we save 9M. If we draft someone we're high on or find someone in FA there's an outside chance he's released this offseason.
