It's the most wonderful time of the year With the kids jingle belling And everyone telling you "Be of good cheer" It's the most wonderful time of the year It's the hap-happiest season of all With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings When friends come to call It's the hap- happiest season of all errr. . . except for the whole playoff-thing.
Sutton should have been gone after last season. Tangini's failure to bring in a good DC for the '08 season is a large part of why Manigini is out of a job today.
I've never understood the wisdom in rejoicing firings until you know who the replacements will be. "Woo-hoo-ing" at the initial dismissals implies that just about anyone else off the street is more qualified. I'm pretty sure that's not the case here, so I'll hold off my "Woo-hoo's" until I see who the hell we've hired to replace these guys. It doesn't do our players any good to dump the entire staff unless you know you're bringing in someone more qualified.
I also just noticed on ESPN.com that Cowher told the Browns he's not interested in being their HC, but is not ruling out other offers.
You're right, of course. Could be that we end up with something worse. Right now, it just feels so freeing.
So this also means players having to learn a new system...back to square one. "Rebuilding"...yet again
Well, if this year was any indication, it's entirely possible for a new system to be installed and still have success right away.
How much worse can you really get from a defensive coordinator who doesn't blitz and plays the prevent even when the game is close, or an offensive coordinator who steadfastly refuses to rush the ball, no matter how many times your RBs prove that they are elite ballplayers?
Why? Was it his masterful use of Leon Washington? You know, the guy who averaged 5.9 YPC? Or his use of Thomas Jones, the conference's leading rusher? Perhaps it was his abandonment of the screen pass that Favre & Co. masterfully executed against teams like New England and Tennessee? If you asked me 16 weeks ago how I felt about Schottenheimer, I'd have said "Yeah, I think this year he'll call a great offense, given all these healthy weapons." Today, I'd say "I'd rather keep Sutton than Schottenheimer, but thank God BOTH are gone."
The coaching was pathetic after the Titans game. I think the owner has a right to be very pissed off at what the fans had to witness on the field for the remainder of the year. BTW, it was already posted on ESPN that Cowher has no interest what so ever in coaching the Browns after he was approached by the Browns organization via phone call.
Clearly not everything was perfect, but a lot of our problems were created by the turnovers. Receivers weren't getting open...that's on them not Schotty. I think there were times where the gameplan could have been better, but the execution on the field was the bigger problem.
Mike Francessa just said none of the coaches have been let go, they are all still under contract, wtf?
I'm pretty sure this info hasn't been reported anywhere else. So I don't know if all this is official yet.
