But let's also not lose sight of the fact that he is generally perceived to be a stand-up guy who said if he decided to play, it would be for the Yankees and for the terms of the player option he declined. I'm sure he knows what his decision to return meant in terms of the Yanks' plans, so I don't see him leaving them high and dry because he "can't handle it." All I'm saying is that an article from the Daily News that somehow managed to finagle a quote out of the tight-lipped Hank Steinbrenner doesn't mean the sky is falling. Pettitte is four days late... but not AWOL. As you know, this is an permitted absence. Let's at least see what happens before penciling Igawa into the rotation. I swear, it's like you need something to worry/complain about.
in Roger Clemens head: Congressman: Mr. Clemens, Andy Petite said he was telling the truth and would only have to answer to God. Mr. Clemens: Yes, but I thought he was talking about ME.
Yes, he probably will show up and play. It will be interesting to see how effective he can be. He has always been intensely focused and I wonder if he will be able to maintain that with what he is about to face.
I think Hughes is going to take a monster leap this year. People have sort of forgotten about him w/ all the Joba hype. As far as Andy, I think he did a great job yesterday. I am still disappointed in what he did but I believe he was finally telling the entire truth. I would like to have seen more teammates at the PC than just 3 but at least the 3 showed up.
Great quote from Hank: http://www.nypost.com/seven/02192008/sports/yankees/hank__focus_too_muchon_yanks_98354.htm
Pettite can afford to be late. The other Yankees are pitching in and working extra to pick up the slack. One reporter overheard a conversation between Jeter and Arod, to the effect of, "Hey, after the other guys are gone, how about you Pitch and I catch for a while...."
this is a very good point and i feel the same way. many people seem to forget that he too was a #1 prospect and is younger then joba. people also seem to forget how good he looks pre- hamstring injury. with all this in consideration ill take hughes as well but would love to see humberto to get a joba like shot in the pen late in the second half if his rehab goes as planned
I think Igawa will have a good year. In the pen or in spot starts. Of course good is a relative term and in this case I mean much better than anybody is expecting after how bad he was last year. I really do think he will be a surprise with Eiland tutoring him all spring.
River Avenue Blues just posted a list of nine of Joe Girardi's seventeen new commandments for Yankee players. Here's what has been discovered so far... 1. Be on time. No excuse for lateness. 2. Shorts and T-shirts only permitted during spring training. 3. Curfew of 1 a.m. 4. Jewelry - only one chain is permitted. No earrings. 5. Only neatly cut beards, mustaches, goatees. No long hair or “unshaven looks.” 6. No family members in the clubhouse until after games. 7. No cell phones in the dugout. 8. Cell phones only allowed in the clubhouse until one hour before games. 9. No competing speakers in the clubhouse thebronxstop.com what do you guys think of the facial hair rule?
Maybe the casual Yankee fans have, but you won't find a diehard Yankee fan that doesn't hold Hughes in the same regard they did last year.
another good point. after seeing him last year im acutally more excited. i dunno if you guys have been on his blog though... kind of embarrassing. philhughes.wordpress.com i know about the facial hair rule. i was more wondering what you though about it being changed. although i heard those rules may only be for spring training.
