Didn't I read where the Eagles were 29th in passing last year?

Why are we debating the play-calling in pre-season games?! It's a waste of time.

Agreed that preseason is vanilla and no team shows their cards.

That being said, they’ve come out and said we are going to run the ball. A lot. They’ve made a big deal about how they want to use all three backs.

This isn’t some surprise…we are going to be a conservative tough running offense. They’ve basically said so.

The only real wildcard here is that Fields is capable of breaking out some big runs.

But he is a very inaccurate passer, and it shows not just in overthrows or dirt balls like Zach had in spades, but more critically it shows in plays where he is like a bit behind a receiver running a slant (like that 3rd down red zone play to GW), where that placement is enough to be the difference between a completed pass and an incompletion. And while some may want to point to his 64% completion rate, the problem is that most of that is due to short dump offs to the backs or receivers within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage.

And the problem with this kind of offense is that you need to be almost perfect. You can’t afford a holding call. Or a false start. You have to be able to put together a bunch of 10 or 12 play drives. And then you have to complete enough third downs or else you’re settling for too many FGs. And god forbid you get behind by a couple of scores…then it becomes really hard to come back.

So yeah, the Eagles won a Super Bowl with a heavy running team, but they have much better talent at WR than we do, they have a better RB than we do who would have gotten 2000 yards if they had played him in the last game, and they have a better QB than we do, and a better defense who can really rush the passer.

AG may want to build that kind of team, and that’s fine, but we don’t yet have the horses for that. And anyways, this league is made for passing the ball…that’s a better route to being a solid Super Bowl contender.

But sure, if we can build a roster like the Eagles, then we can play that kind of ball I guess…we are just not there yet
