Your first call needs to be to the booth and see if either Gruden or Cowher want to come back. After that, it's a crap shoot. There are no other name coaches to look at and I think any existing coach being fired (Harbaugh) will have a tough time in New York. I think going for the hot coordinator or college coach is your best bet but look at how that has worked for us in the past (Al Groh,Lou Holtz, etc).

I don't want Cowher. I want a new age coach. Especially one versed in the QB position. Cowher wouldn't be much different than Rex. A slight upgrade but not much different.

There is no way that Sandy Alderson. ..I mean Idzik, will hire a big name, big money coach. And the bloom is off the rose on Harbaugh as far as I'm concerned.

Not having a QB that is competent, it will not matter who the HC is. I dont see how Idzik can stick around after setting up this team as an utter disaster and trainwreck. I dont care if hes building for the future, having a team that takes a step back this badly is ridiculous. You could say that he set himself up for this with the success last season.

I would like a head coach of the following people: Dan Quinn, Darrell Bevell, Kevin Sumlin, David Shaw, Brian Kelly.

I think a lot will depend upon whether Woody has the stones to make a whole sale change including the scouting department.

New GM would be set up nicely with 7 picks and >$20 million in cap space.

    Darrell Bevell
He is the logical choice given JI's background. Man I loved rex and wanted him here for the long haul, but his is another ASS beating that his team just didn't show up for. His D WAS great 5 years ago, but was picked apart yesterday despite numerous sacks. The offence has been inept since he got here...it pains me to say it, but he's got to go.

Good post you are right on about most everything, especially how this will be an attractive set up for a new GM/coach.

I liked Shaw last year but he has made some terrible in-game decisions this year at Stanford that is alarming to me. Both of their losses (home USC and @ ND) should not have been losses but he managed the game poorly. That scares me a little because I had not seen that before out of him. I also don't think he leaves Stanford anyway but who knows.

Brian Kelly is an interesting name and would be a good hire but would he leave ND?

I'll throw another name out there of a guy I would LOVE to have. Gus Malzahn of Auburn. That guy has the magic touch. He's a rising star.

Woody needs to make a splash with this next hire. He needs to be a proven winner and builder of teams from the pros or college. Or a top assistant on one of these teams. Anything else is just foolishness.

Interesting with Malzahn. I wonder if he would be successful in the NFL, he seems to get by on spread plays and gimick runs.

I think his offense and his philosophy would be successful in the NFL I just worry about his ability to manage NFL egos and the media pressures of NY.

Urgh going from a Defensive HC to another Defensive HC.

    How exciting.

Does that matter though. Not all coaches would "ignore" (for better or for worse) the offense just because they are considered offensive coaches.

No one could win with this team, the offense has few weapons and the defense has no secondary which in turns makes the rest of the defense look bad because they're tying to compensate.

Yea pretty sad when Phillip Adams making a nice play was literally shocking. Offense needs at least 2 more receivers and a QB to be competent. Defense needs a better secondary all together.

How much of a step back have we taken? Was our secondary play piss poor last year? Our receiving corps paper thin with no depth? Our QB options inconsistent at best? Our OLine porous? That's 4 checks, and there's plenty more you could throw in - penalties and lack of turnovers created for instance. Have we improved to any significant level? No, and that is something you can blame on Idzik, but I don't think we've taken a massive step backwards either. There's a few marginal improvements, largely offset by a few marginal steps backward. It was a terrible performance with just about no positives, but we've had plenty of those in the last few years too.

Record wise they have taken a step backwards and that is all that matters.

Secondary play was not this bad. Teams are completing passes at will against the Jets. Couldnt stop the crossing route and they ran it 15 times.

Receiving core still the same minus Decker - still the GMs fault

O-Line - Probably has to do with the piss poor QB play but the guards have been very bad

Penatlies and lack of discipline seems to have gotten worse

I like Rex but its becoming painfully clear he's not Head Coach material. We all have bitched about the Jets below avg. QB's not progressing, making the same mistakes over and over and over again. Rex is no different. At some point its needs to be recognized and realized by the owner and GM that he's not capable of improving, he is what he is. Rex lost his swagger, had his balls cut off, can't make normal decisions a real Head Coach makes, can't see reality through his rose colored glasses, can't get the team to be disciplined, and he can't adapt his defense. The league has caught onto and passed Rex, he's very predictable and opposing teams have taken advantage of it.

Marty also seems to be putting his worst "philly OC" foot forward. The run game is gone, the great play calling is gone. He either is falling victim to the Rex mentality of not adapting or he's given up on the talent on offense. Either way I think Marty is gone as well if Rex goes so if Rex is fired they need a complete overhaul of the coaching staff.

    Oh, and one more thing..

Lets get a REAL franchise QB, not someone that hasn't proven himself in college, not someone with a good arm but no experience in a pro set and someone with the mental capacity to read the entire field and hit the open receiver. If that guy isn't available in the draft then rent a QB to get the team through until one can be drafted.

Rex continues to allow Pace / Harris try to cover players they can't even come close to covering. Rex continues to play Kyle Wilson despite the fact that he can't cover a tupperware bowl if he was given the lid and instructions and he continues to do stupid things on D at the wrong time. Why is he bringing the house on 3rd and like 17 leaving a hot read WIDE open? Rex is lost, he needs to be taken in back of the wood shed and put out of his misery.
