Then why has Saleh made a point of saying that they continue to see AVT's position as guard? What do they do with Becton next year - do they just have him sitting on the bench all year? Do they remove Max Mitchell from the lineup and have him on the bench when he may become a very good starting tackle? Mitchell's been outperforming every other rookie tackle this year, including all the high first round picks. Depth on the Oline is a very good thing to have. Its good to have starting calibre backups on the bench (especially if they're on cheap contracts, like Herbig).
If at this time next year, Becton and Mitchell have earned starting spots, we can move AVT back to guard. Otherwise AVT should play tackle, and they shouldn't play. I have nothing against Becton in particular, but he's at the point where he should be judged on his NFL performance, not what he did in college.
I agree depth is a great thing to have just think 3 weeks ago the Jets were in a panic regarding OL depth. As of now I’ll say AVT could be the possible LT with Becton/Mitchell competing for RT. That’s assuming Fant is not resigned …. and Herbig continues stellar play at G.
I believe you will see him back on the bench this Sunday. Brown- LDT - McG - AVT - Remmers. 4 days and we’ll find out. With AVT being our swing OL, it’s good to know he has a good backup in Herbig
There is NO situation I would like that includes Becton as a starter…we’ve seen movie twice now. No thanks
Have we though? It's more like we've just seen a couple of brief trailers - some just think they know the ending without even reading the script.
He’s definitely playing with a nasty streak on the line. Really a pleasant surprise, may have found a home.
Not even a fully fit Becton, the Becton in season 1? Seems a little short sighted tbh, he hasn't asked to be injured, granted he could control his weight better if indeed that was a problem during rehab, a lot of hearsay gets pumped out as fact. I would be tempted to get him down to a weight that his knees can manage and then see if he can do a job for us at a position even if it meant dropping to a G spot.
AVT should play RT the rest of this year, or as long as Brown is healthy and then be the LT next year and onward. Becton & Mitchell can compete for the RT position and be depth. I haven’t seen Saleh say they want AVT at guard, only that they want to stop moving him around and let him stick to one position. He played well enough at LT in his one start with little practice to make me think he can be a damn good LT and if he can be then that’s where he should play, even if he can be a bit better at guard.
Herbig’s been great as has the rest of the line for the most part. Tomlinson’s been pretty bad. He’s the weak link.
I agree. I said this a couple threads ago. AVT might be the right tackle of the future and there’s no reason to change that when he’s excelling right now.
As far as Becton goes, my guess is that he's going to be in camp but not guaranteed anything - even a roster spot. He's making about $6 mil next year and I'm pretty sure that's his dead money amount also. He might just end up being an expensive back up.
Don't forget when AVT moved over the LT and Max Mitchell went down, McGovern kicked out to RT. Played pretty good! Jets may be the only team with 9 legit tackles and no center.
If Becton's knee isn't completely healed OR can't hold up, Becton's time with the Jets is over and perhaps Becton's NFL career as well. Can't wait for Becton simply because these injuries might well be the result of his bulk and will continue to occur with regularity as long as he remains a behemoth. With the way his spot is being backfilled and handled successfully, Becton will be lucky to get a roster spot. Only because of his contract, I can see that happening.
The Jets have been running the ball a lot the last two weeks. That covers many issues related to a stepdown in quickness or footwork. Older OL (and DL) don't get weaker in their 30's they get a bit slower and less agile. Tomlinson only needs to maintain his block for a fraction of the time on a run play that he does on a pass play.
