Steelers get rid of there Vets when they are to old to play anywhere else and they end up retiring(Ward and Farrior). And they always have that next guy up ready to take the vets place
First... Farrior was drafted by the Jets. Just we let him walk. Steelers pounced on him like a hungry dog on a steak meat. Next, having the next guy up - that's a great point too. At this rate, that's not what is going to happen with the Jets, since Tannenbaum will be busy trading picks away like he always does.
That Globe article was a great read and I think pretty much spot on as far as the sources of the Jets' problems. I can be sold on keeping Ryan as a HC going into next year but there is no way that I can get behind this team next year with Mark Sanchez as the QB, Mike Tannenbaum as GM and Sparano as OC. At least 2 of those things need to change if not all 3. Although I am not a big fan of Ryan's style, he has proven that he can win if given a decent level of talent. The challenge is that this team may need to be gutted next year and basically rebuild.
I feel just the opposite. I have zero confidence in Ryan and some confidence that a good staff might be able to do something with Sanchez.
If Woody is serious about twinning he has to look at Tanny - the man who has final say on all personnel decisions - and see that he has failed. He has failed in keeping his own players, free agency signings, and drafts. Just across the board - he brought in Sanchez and has basically stripped away talent each year from him. Tanny has to go -- you can't keep him around another year. The fans are already turning on the team and the organization - a move has to be made. This is business not a friendship quilting circle.
Biggs, I feel that Sanchez hardest critics don't take what he's had to face for 4 years into consideration. 1. 4 different receiving combinations in 4 years 2. a RT (and RG) situation that has been ABYSMAL from a pass blocking perspective Austin Howard has been only marginally better than Hunter as a pass blocker and MUCH better as a run blocker 3. A running game that has been non existant in 2011 and this season. and OCs who didn't coach to this kids strength. Athletically, he is a much better QB than Brady. Sanchez is best when he's allowed to improvise, throws on the run and in the hurry up. He's better suited for a solid spread offense. Getting rid of Thomas Jones for Shonn Greene was a mistake and getting rid of Alan Faneca if for nothing else as a locker room presence while Sanchez was developing was also a mistake The succesful (not even great) QBs have continuity in their receiving corps. and at least decent pass blocking. Sanchez has not had that luxury consitently over his 4 year career.
While I do think Sanchez's time in green and white is almost up, I also think Jets as organization did everything in their power to make sure Sanchez would fail. If that trend continues, it won't matter if Jets draft the next incarnation of Peyton Manning, Joe Montana and Tom Brady all rolled into one. That kid will surely fail too.
If you'd put Peyton Manning on a bad team with a bad organization from the start he'd have had his dad's career all over again. Archie Manning was a hell of a QB but New Orleans was enough to obscure that.
Peyton Manning's career trajectory with the Jets might have resembled his father's - what do you think that means to mere mortals like Nacho?
Pretty good assesment I think. Yes, Tanny is the problem but it is the owner who hires those people. Oh well, can't do anything about him but I hope he does a better job next time. I must also wonder if the general impatience to win in New York, coupled with no SB appearance, much less a win, since 1969 for our JETS, is compatible with a slower rebuilding approach? I like your analysis thanks for posting.
Indeed Massena! I think being in the NY Media has A LOT to do with the decision to constantly have a win NOW and at ALL COSTS, because not matter what team you are, EVERY NY teams is playing in the shadow of the mighty Yankees and having that many parades in the last 16 years, New Yorkers EXPECT our teams to win, win now and win OFTEN.
Neither Rex or Mr. T are going anywhere. Losing organizations change leadership positions like a carousel every few yrs and they never get anywhere. Successful organizations stay with their HC & GM through thick and thin. The dumb fans always want to see coaches and gms get fired - but that is rarely a successful strategy for an organization - especially when its a team that recently went to back to back championship games. There are some player personnel issues that will need to be addressed. a major overhaul is not needed and isn't gonna happen. Its pretty funny to see some Jets fans pretending that bill cowher is some sort of savior when in reality the steelers stayed w/bill through several down seasons and he didnt even win a sb until his 14th season in pitts. Continuity and consistency builds successful organizations. changing the hc/gm every 4 yrs is only a good strategy if you want to be a perennial loser. Winners stick with their gm/hc especially when they've taken you to 2 championship games.
Do you really believe Tanny doesnt consult with Rex and the other jets coaching staff prior to personnel decisions? My thoughts are Rex has had outstanding players that were brought by the prior coaching staff...Rex and his staff are poor talent evaluators and Tanny is getting who they have recommend!
AS, although Tanny has helped to field a team that went to back to back AFCC games, he's also largely responsible for the current Jets state of affairs and based on the cap figures he's going to need to gut a lot of the team to get us under the cap and with trading for TeBUM and yet again giving up another draft pick for him, waste of a pick by the way, we won't be able to fill a lot of the holes we have (rb, (I know know one thinks Shonn Greene, Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight are franchise RB's), blocking TE, RG and RT, OLB, FS, WR, QB and ILB) in cap hell and limited picks. Tanny is not a great talent evaluator and has proven lately not to be much of the capologist everyone was praising him to be. Sometimes you have to cut your losses. The Bengals have stayed with the same GM/HC for a while now, they've have more losing seasons than winning ones. Something has to give. I would LOVE to see Rex stay, but Tanny has been with us more than 4 years and it's largely because of REX we had back to back AFCC, not Tanny. MHO
Landry has his moments, but he was one of the real culprits against NE. I think some here overrate him, probably because they like the way he hits (I do, too), but they should not ignore that he has coverage issues. Coples??? He has shown very little so far. Not saying he's a bust, but it's way premature to cite him as a core player going forward. Harris also has been having a mediocre season for someone who many here rate highly. I don't think he's so great. Keller has done very little this season, although he does seem to have improved his run blocking. At this point I don't think he deserves a big contract going forward. If he wants one, he's probably better off going somewhere else. I am a fan of sorts of Kerley, but he makes his share of mistakes. I wish he could cut down on them, and do not consider him a core player right now, either. On the other hand I think Ferguson has quietly been having a somewhat better year than last year. So at best you have Mangold, Ferguson, Holmes, Revis, Cromartie, probably Wilkerson. I will throw in Harris for good measure just to be generous. Meanwhile the rest of the roster is a mix of decent to mediocre to just plain bad players. Players getting old. Younger players who do not inspire much confidence. It's a real mess.
