Interesting. There's a guy on realgm.com who does his rankings this way, he uses a formula he calls the "trench counter":

    (2x Yards per pass)
    + (2x Yards per carry)
    + (.5 First downs)
    - (Penalty yards/10)
    - (2.5 Turnovers)
    - (Opposing Team's Trench Counter)

    Read more: http://football.realgm.com/src_from.../explaining_the_trench_counter/#ixzz13gOWhn00

This week, his top 5 teams came out to SD, Pitt, NYJ, NYG and ATL.

I think to be really accurate, a good system should add a weighting factor for the quality of team that all the stats came from. So for example, you would get more points for the same yardage against the Ravens than against the Lions

How do you leave the Titans out of the top 10 at this point? They've crushed the Giants and played the Steelers close. They are crushing lesser teams as well. Their only real oops so far this year has been their game against the Broncos.

I agree that my rankings are lacking in this way. I just don't have a good (quick) way to gather the game by game info required to do this analysis.

As the season goes on the schedules that teams play will even out for the most part. At this point in the schedule most teams will have played some good and some bad teams. Baltimore is certainly suffering from having faced the Jets, Pats and Stillers in their first seven games. They've also played Cleveland, Buffalo and Cincy, losing one and barely beating the other two.

    Time for more hilarity

    1) Pitt - Dominating defense, good passing YPA
    2) KC - Strong possession running game, good defense.
    3) Jints - Good offense that gives the ball away too much. Worst return game in the league. Defense is performing quite well, I rate them 4th.
    4) Jets - Good possession running game, I have the defense ranked third. Good special teams play.
    5) NE - High scoring, low turnover balanced offense. Below average defense.
    6) Tenn - High scoring, mostly passing offense. Above average defense.
    7) Phi - Strong rushing based offense. Average defense.
    8) Chi - Number two defense, Below average offense.
    9) SD - High scoring passing offense. Defense is performing well, similar to Jints with fewer takeaways.
    10) Colts - Manning.
    11) GB - Good passing offense. Allows few points but plenty of yards on the ground.

    26) Cle - No longer the worst in the league.
    27) Ari - Figuring out how to get God to tell Warner to unretire.
    28) Det - Underperforming offense that scores well. Good return game. Poor defense.

how do you rate the saints above the jets? Just because they beat the steelers? IMO the steelers are overrated and I would put them below gang green

Because it's a week to week ranking system and the injury plagued Saints are playing better than the full strength Jets.

The Steelers are not overrated. Every team in the top 10 has been inconsistent this year but they won games without Ben AND Ben is still in week 4 of the pre-season...you can't hold that against them.

Well, I was mocked for having the Giants in my top 5 a few weeks ago. It turns out I was right. Sadly the Jets have fallen out of the top 5 for sure.

    1. Steelers
    2. Patriots
    3. Giants
    4. Colts
    5. Ravens
    6. Jets
    7. Falcons

I see your logic is: Getting spanked by the 2-5 Browns >> Fighting back to beat the 2-5 Lions

    Interesting.

Congrats on being right about the giants. How do you figure that the second best team in the league just lost while the giants, colts and jets all won?

    Here are my latest rankings:

    1) Pitt - Dominating defense matched with a strong passing game.

    2) Jints - Best balanced team in the league. Only weak points are giveaways and special teams where they are bad.

    3) Jets - Strong defense, above average offense, best special teams. Weaknesses are passing attack and takeaways.

    4) Tenn - Second most balanced team with strong special teams. No significant weaknesses.

    5) Phi - Tied for best rushing attack.

    6) Chi - 2nd best performing defense. Offense is below average.

    7) GB - Another well balanced team. Special teams are below average again. Rushing defense leaves something to be desired.

    8) KC - Strong passing game, leading the league in giveaways. Defense is well above average.

    9) 'Aints - Doing it with defense believe it or not. Strong passing defense is stingy giving up points.

    10) Atl - Offense is putting up points and not giving the ball away. Defense is poor against the pass but takes the ball away at a good clip.

    11) Bal - Average offense that struggles to run the ball. Bend but don't break defensive performance.

    12) NE - High scoring low turnover offense. Defense is sub-par.

    13) Minn - Offense puts up alot of yards but below average in scoring. Defense is slightly above average but fails to take the ball away.

    14) SD - Amazing passing attack. Special teams are playing at an all time worst pace. Defense is decent.

    15) Oak - High scoring rushing offense with alot of giveaways. Defense is not good against the rush.

    16) Indy - High scoring one dimensional passing offense. Bad special teams.
Defense is horrible against the rush.

    17) Houston - Best offense in the league matched with a bad defense.

    18) Washington - Pretty average across the board. Strongest point is takeaways, weakest is rushing defense.

    19) Rams - Bad offense matched with a good defense.

    20) Cleveland - Below average rushing based offense. Average defense.

    21) Tampa - Consistently below average. Particularly bad at stopping the run.

    22) Miami - Offense is well below average. Defense is slightly below average, stronger against the rush than the pass (not that you could tell that this week.)

    23) Cincy - Poor special teams.

    24) SanFran - Poor offense matched with an average defense.

    25) Leon Washingtons - Bad offense matched with below average defense.

    26) Detroit - League best return game.

    27) Jax - League worst defense.

    28) Arizona - Average rushing game. Nothing else good to say.

    29) Dallas - Offense is simply poor. Defense is bad.

    30) Denver - Poor one dimensional passing offense matched with a bad defense.

    31) Carolina - League worst offense, cannot say enough about how badly they have performed.

    32) Toronto - Bad offense matched with bad defense. They can rush the ball a little bit at least.

    Probably topics of debate:

Baltimore - Baltimore is rushing for 3.6 ypc, this is one full standard deviation below league average. Their defense is giving up 4.2 ypc and 6.7 ypa which are both very close to league average. Their performance has been very average.

Indy - Indy is rushing the ball for 3.7 ypc or just slightly better than Baltimore. Their passing attack is actually averaging .2 ypa less than Baltimore's. Indy's special teams are performing poorly in returns and punts. Their defense is allowing 5.1 ypc rushing. Their defense also has 13 takeaways (7 forced fumbles and 6 Ints) which rates them very low overall.

    20) Rams - Passing attack is pretty bad.

    21) Cle - Not much to say, pretty average to below average.

    22) Houston - Really good offense matched with a really bad defense.

    23) SF - Have trouble scoring

    24) Washington - Horrendous rushing defense.

    25) Jax - Worst defense in the league

    26) Cincy - Pretty good against the pass.

    27) Loins - Offense can't put up yards but can score from time to time. Have trouble stopping the run.

    28) Dallas - Really bad defense but special teams are good.

    29) Denver - Really bad defense

    30) Arizona - Worst all around team

    31) Toronto - Not last anymore

    32) Clausens - Worst offense of all time, so bad that it pulls an average defense down to worst team in the league status.

If I were to do manual adjustments I'd move Chicago down and Baltimore and Indy up.

Stop with this Jints, Loins, Clausens...shit, it's really gay. Not saying you are but the nicknames are pretty shitty.

    1. NE
    2. NYJ
    3. Philly
    4. ATL
    5. Pitt
    6. NO
    7. Indy
    8. Chicago
    9. Green Bay
    10. Tenn
(Dropped out of the top 10: New York Giants & Baltimore)

Also on your list, I'd move Cleveland and Tampa way up and Seattle and Miami way down.

Did you read where I wrote that I would move Chicago down myself?

There are many reasons my system ranks them highly:

Their defense is allowing 16.2 ppg, 3.5 ypc rushing and 6ypa passing with 28 takeaways. If the Jets D was performing at this level...

Additionally, the Bears return units are getting nearly 27 yards and over
16 yards per return on kickoffs/punts.

Their Offense is not performing well, to say the least, scoring under 20 ppg and rushing for less than 4ypc.

In order for the Jets to win the game against them, they will need to take the ball away from Chicago because the Offense is going to have a tough day.

What is keeping Cleveland down is their offense. Their passing game is sub-par and they score very few points. Their defense is slightly above average overall. Additionally, I think they are performing about at the ceiling of their talent level, there is very little upside to their potential for the rest of the year.

Tampa has an average offense. They rush the ball fairly well but are below average in scoring. Tampa's special teams are some of the worst in the league. Tampa's defense allows allows 4.4 ypc rushing, this is no way to win football games.

Seattle's rank is buoyed by having very good special teams and a defense that is playing at a roughly league average.

Not sure why you want Miami ranked lower than 17. They have a 5-4 record, defense that is playing a bit above average and a struggling offense. This defines a middle of the road NFL team this year. I could understand taking away points due to a QB injury but my system doesn't include that. I anticipate that they will slip due to losses the next few weeks. Ironically this will probably lead to Chicago looking like a better team next week.
