What elite QB is available? Certainly not Fitzpatrick. We win 6 or 7 or maybe on the high side 8 no matter which of the 4 QBs plays. Less with one of two that have never played.
How are the Jets only capable of winning 7 games max with Fitzpatrick as the QB next year? You are underrating the talent on the Jets roster.
Exactly What should the Jets do? Not spend a dime to try and improve the team until a top tier QB basically falls into their lap?
I think the schedule is tough, the first 6 games of the season we play 5 playoff teams, and the Bills, a team we lost to twice last year. you think the Jets are playoff bound after starting the year 2-4? With that schedule I would hope we go 3-3.
I’m not saying the Jets schedule isn’t tough. I agree it is. But the Jets were a 10 win team last year who, if they bring back Fitz, have improved. Now that doesn’t mean they are going to win 10 again, but to act like they can’t beat any of the playoff teams isn’t fair. They beat New England last year and really should have beat them twice. They blew 2 games to Buffalo, either one of those games could have went either way. They didn’t get destroyed. They proved to me they can at the very least play with teams like Cincy, Baltimore, Pitt, KC, and Buffalo. I don’t look at those teams the way I would look at teams like the Seahawks and Patriots. It’s a tough schedule but the Jets have a very good D on paper and playmakers on offense, they have elite receivers. They need Fitz back, we’ll see what Forte has left in the tank, the O-Line worries me but the Jets made due with it last year, they need someone to step up at the other guard position and Breno to either improve or get outplayed by someone better in TC. If Forte can still go and the O-Line can improve a little I don’t see why we can’t be a pretty good team this season. Of course, this is assuming Fitz is back which is anything but a sure thing.
yea we won 10 games, but can you think of a really good team that we beat? New England game, maybe, but I feel N.E. played horribly. Hell the only quality win we had all year was a against the Colts. I think we're an 8-8 team this year, at best. factor in the 'fins and Bills both get to play N.E. without Brady. It's going to take a minimum 10 games to win this division, can you point me to 10 wins with this schedule, a 30 year old RB, a "revamped O-line", two, maybe three first year starters at linebacker, and as of right now THE WORST STARTING QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL.
I don't really look at a schedule and point to wins and losses. You don't know till you see how the teams are playing and how the teams look coming out of TC and into the week. I just think so many people are talking about what the Jets don't have and not about what they do have. We have two big time receivers who are the focal point of our passing attack, a RB who at the least gives us a more well rounded look in the backfield (run, catch, block), Amaro is coming back who could be able to create some mismatches. Clady is an upgrade over Brick if he can stay healthy, our offense wasn't a problem last year and I feel it probably slightly improved. Our defense wasn't a problem last year, and that improved. Once again, on paper. I'm just looking at the Jets, not the other teams. I don't see a bad team. That's all I'm saying. Would it really shocked you if the Jets beat Cincy at home week 1 and then went to Buffalo and won to start the season 2-0? I can see that playing out.
come out of the those first 7 games with 3 or 4 wins, and we'll have a season. otherwise it's over before Halloween. between Cincy, Pitt, Buff, Balt, Ariz, those will be tough physical games. We have a good defense, and we'll need them. also have to play with less mistakes (please no Geno).. I'm not so sure we've improved much from last season though. We swapped Brick for Clady, Ivory for Forte, Snacks for McLendon, Davis for Henderson, Cro for Williams? all in all, fairly comparable. i agree with you that Oline is really a big key, particularly the Tackles. Clady has to rebound and stay healthy which is a big question. Breno has to stop sucking. we need a guy like Qvale, Shell or Ijalana to come out of nowhere this season.
Definitely would not shock me if we beat Cincy at home, and beat buffalo on the road. But lets be realistic here, Fitzpatrick had a career year, not fair to assume he can do that again, if hes even here. Geno Smith, there is no man I despise more in the history of the franchise, or the United States.
I think based off of last years play Davis and Cro might be additions by subtractions. Although I'm a little worried about the CB position opposite Revis. They really need Burris, Williams, or Milliner to step up. If Clady is healthy I think that's huge. Forte was a great back but we just don't know how much he has left, if he has another season or two in him then that's big for the Jets. The first 7 games are definitely a tough test and the Jets are going to have to play well if they want to have a season after that part of the schedule is over, I'm just saying I don't think the Jets are incapable of surviving that stretch.
If Fitz isn't at QB we are in big big trouble. Totally agree. And he is coming off a career year, he'll basically have to repeat his production. Idk if he can put up those numbers again, but I think in Gailey's offense he can be successful and give the Jets a competent QB which is something they don't normally have.
Chan Gailey made the playoffs with Mike Tomzak as QB. Hell if he made the PO with a guy as bad as Tomzak, he can certainly make them with Smith. Powell, Decker and Marshall can make Geno look good. Hell they made no-arm journeyman Fitz look good last year. Lam
oh i agree. we are definitely capable of surviving that stretch, and being competitive on the season. while i don't think we've improved much from a talent perspective (i consider Clady a downgrade until he can show otherwise), we can still improve as a team overall. it's another year in the system. the nucleus of the team remains (assuming Fitz is back). i expect the coaching to improve, as it was spotty at times last year. and the defense in particular, has a chance to really improve from a production standpoint, as they underachieved last season. *Edit* Special teams has a chance to really improve from both a talent and production standpoint too
Surprisingly positive breakdown by Cimini, of why this contract makes sense: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-je...-scored-with-muhammad-wilkersons-new-contract Gives us good flexibility, while also sending the right message to the team. cliff notes from the article: - for essentially the cost of two franchise tags (which we likely would've done anyway), we retain his contract rights for several additional years, without being locked into them. - 2 years are fully guaranteed, with 9M dead money if we were to cut him in the 3rd year... comparable to Revis deal in that regard. dovetails nicely with our decision timeline on Richardson, keeping each guy on their toes. - frees up 5.7M in cap space this season, maybe used to sign Fitz.
Of course we could've had Mo for cheaper had we signed him a year ago. But given the current situation, Cimini's right in saying that Macc hit a home run with this contract.
yep, should've signed him 2 years ago. i remember some people freaking out on this board at my suggestion of 11M per during the 2014 offseason (Idzik's non-spending debacle). now it's 17M per. with the way the salary cap has consistently been climbing, it makes sense to extend your own before that 5th year ends, or even sooner if you are sold on a player. salaries that seem really high don't look nearly as crazy just a year or so later. but water under the bridge.....like you said, based on the current situation it's a very good outcome.
A lot of fans thought Wilk wasn't worth the contract, a lot of fans didn't want him getting paid here. Not many people were on the resign Wilk bandwagon. In hindsight we could've given him a long-term deal 11M per and would've had plenty of cash to spend, but that's on Idzik.
