As a Pads fan this is a great haul for you, as Gonzo was never going to remain in SD. I really liked Kelly and Rizzo, Fuentes has shown (from all accounts) good speed and defense.
None of this is even remotely correct. V-Mart wanted more years than the Sox offered him. The money was the same. V-Mart will likely not play much catcher which is a dire need, 1B and DH aren't. The Sox offered the exact same years and money for Rivera. Going back to the Yankees was the obvious choice. I would love for you to come with the source that says Beltre is pissed that V-Mart wasn't resigned. That's simply not true.
He's a good innings eater in the NL. Someone you can rely on to go out and give 6 IP and 3 ER's. Decent pickup for a team that craves depth.
Rivera was reported to be offered a 3 year deal by the Red Sox. Here is a link I found just for you, but I heard it several times on NESN (New England Sports Network). http://www.necn.com/12/03/10/Red-Sox-made-a-run-at-Mariano-Rivera/landing_sports.html?blockID=365480&feedID=3352 Now today, or last night I guess they said it was actually a two year offer. So I didn't make it up, the report just changed from the morning. The Beltre thing once again on NESN, I think it was NESN daily. This link actually shows Beltre commenting on The Martinez situation and how he wasn't happy with the club. I just typed these in on google and found them, so they aren't hard to find. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2010/12/beltre_hopes_to.html It may not be The Times, but I initially heard all of this on television
Haha and seriously what are you trying to pull? 1B and DH weren't a need? They were until about a few hours ago when the Sox got Gonzalez. I wrote that at 8am yesterday. Nice try.
That's great, that's completely out of context. V-Mart was never a realistic option for resigning, Beltre was.
So you are saying the Red Sox traded for Martinez with the plan that they had absolutely no intention of resigning him, when catcher and 1B were a need (Youk moves to 3rd, which the Sox have been saying they want to do)? All the while, Beltre was offered a only a one year contract to being with, showing that the Sox weren't convinced he would be in their future to begin with.
As a Yanks fan, I really hate the Gonzalez deal. Casey Kelley is the most overrated prospect in baseball (seriously, just look at his numbers) but because of all the hype the Sox were able to spin him and 2 other solid (not great) prospects for one of the top 5 first basemen in baseball. Any fair package for Adrian Gonzalez should've started with Clay Buccholz, IMO.
This was all about money. San Diego isn't building for the "future", they just couldn't afford to pay him Ryan Howard-type money. I don't think Casey Kelley is overrated. The Red Sox weren't the one's hyping him. Every single scouting website has him in the their top ten. I'd heard of him plenty before, but I never really paid close attention to what he's done. You're right about his numbers not being great. I think it's just a case of him putting it all together. Buster Olney claims he'll be one of the best young pitchers in the NL pretty soon - we'll see about that though.
He's got loads of potential because he can throw 95 and he's got a sharp curveball, but the guy has been a full time pitcher for only 1 season (and during it he got shelled in AA.) Plenty of prospects have had raw stuff and been unable to put it all together; I don't see any justification for listing Kelley as a top 10 prospect. I just think that if you're gonna trade away one of the best players in baseball, you have to get someone that you know can help your major league club in the near future. The Padres didn't. If the Yankees had made this trade, by the way, people would be absolutely livid about how they robbed San Diego. It's funny how nobody in the media seems to care all that much when "small market" Boston does it though.
The deal fell through because Gonzalez and the Sox couldn't agree on a contract extension. Per rotoworld: This basically means A-Gone will remain with the Padres until the trade deadline.
I'm happy about this. He will be traded, even the Padres are still in the playoff hunt...but it will still be nice to have a power hitting Gold Glover for half of the season. There's no doubt in my mind we'll see a similar type of trade go down at the deadline.
Fuck you Epstein. Open the fucking wallet and pay someone besides JD Drew for once you cheap piece of shit. BRING BACK THE DUKE!
Boston's yearly poverty act is getting old. The Yankees "budget" is a joke, I admit, but at least they spend a few hundred million before they throw that word around.
I'm not complaining about being "small market", I'm complaining about the cheap piece of shit GM that apparently thinks they are.
