Bingo. We've seen he can run fast and get downfield. Haven't seen much as far as his short and intermediate route-running ability.

It's typical for the off season. Every possible vet in FA will be rejuvenated WHEN the Jets inevitably sign him, and every untried player on the roster will have a pro bowl year next year if not this one.

Yeah, Clowney might get it done, but it's far from certain he will. If the Jets are inactive regarding the current wr roster this off season, I think that will prove to be a mistake.

We should just go after Nicks and carry 7 WRs this year:
    Coles/Cotchery/Nicks/Stuckey/Clowney/Smith/Wright.

It's not the best of situations, but you have to figure Coles is a goner after this year. Why not already have his incumbent on the roster having had a chance to adjust for a year?

This way, in 2010, Nicks steps in as the full time starter and you have a potentially lethal trio in Nicks/Cotchery/Keller. This past year we saw what an elite trio can bring to a team -- a trip to the Superbowl and a near victory.

I'm sure people will disagree, but if the FO really wants to keep Smith and Wallace, I don't think that should deter us from getting a guy like Nicks. Bite the bullet and carry 7 WRs for one season; it could really pay off in the end.

Ah, I saw the Wright signing, but I didn't know they officially cut Smith. Thanks for the heads up.

Well then, carrying 6 WRs isn't problematic at all. It makes even more sense to go after Nicks now.

Precise route running is so much more important than flatline speed. It doesn't matter if you run a 4.7 40 if you are in better position to catch the ball than the defensive back when the throw reaches you.

For DBs I can see the value of the 40 time more, because straight line recovery speed can be the difference between a tackle and a touchdown (look at the recovery skills of Rogers-Cromartie for an example--he's not great in coverage but his raw athletic tools let him stay with almost anyone.)

I don't know why people can't understand this simple concept. The 40 is a test of relative speed given under exactly the same conditions for all players. The underlying assumption is that if player x is faster than player y in shorts, player x will be faster in pads also.

Why is speed important for a WR - it is one way to get separation from the DB. The ability to separate, route running and good hands are really the only things that matter for a receiver in the NFL.

If you're a big guy like Bolden, your size and strength allows you to get separation almost at will. Or if you're super crafty and fit like Jerry Rice, you can also be successful. So their 40 times are much less relevant.

But not all guys have the strength or game intelligence of those two. For many if not most receivers, speed is the best proxy for "can this guy separate?".

Oh, we are most definitely active now.

Uh, we didn't cut Brad Smith...yet. There's still a chance that he gets the axe if we manage a solid FA receiver.
