Hopefully, and as others have previously noted, often a player develops a close relationship with their positional coach. If Terrell Suggs is close with Pettine, and his signing as DC would influence Suggs in his coming to New York, I'd be all for it.

Doubt we have room under the cap for Suggs. Unless we cut BT and his $4 million for 4 sacks yearly agreement... I'm hoping Gholston has big gains with a new regime. Mangini did have some weirdo complex gap-control assignment scheme that obviously confused the hell out of VG.... If they let him just go after the QB I think he'd improve greatly.

The best guy I can think of for DC is Keith Butler...if they could even get him that is. He will probably be in big demand.

Another bit of Info on Mike, this info was from Jan 08, but sounds like these 2 were already planning a package deal.

A quote from the middle of the article...

"That's good news for Pettine since Ryan has told him that he will be coming with him wherever he ends up.

Not only that, but Ryan, if he becomes a head coach, has told Pettine that he would likely make him his defensive coordinator or assistant head coach.

?If I was his defensive coordinator, more than likely (Ryan) would still call the game, it would be more in title only,? said Pettine. ?But we'll cross that bridge when it happens.?

Nah. There's varieties wiseass. Dallas runs a one-gap 3-4... Pitt and Balt run different versions as well.

Relax people Sutton will not be DC any longer.

I said this in another thread, if he is, all the people on this forum I was a wiseass to can hit me in the head with a night stick as hard as they want. First game of the regular season....... That is how confident I am that he will not be DC. It's a lock. However he may get a smaller role as a position coach or something.

Someone on another Jets message board said per SNY that Schittenheimer is being retained. No links though.

I read somewhere Schott will ask to go somewhere else as an OC if he is not named HC.

Well I hope you're source is right buddy. I think RR reserves the right to assemble his own staff.

It is clear as day to me the ONLY reason Jets brass was so enamored with Schott is to keep the offense familiar in order to convince Favre to return. That will help Woody sell his PSLs, tickets, endorsements, etc. etc.

Jets must choose between Schottenheimer, Ryan

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Brian Schottenheimer, New York Jets, NFL coaching search, Rex Ryan

A prevailing thought circulating around New York and the NFL is that the Jets can pull off a daily double and hire a dynamic duo.

They can land two of their top candidates by hiring Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan as their head coach and keeping Brian Schottenheimer as their offensive coordinator. But hold on. Anyone making that suggestion should be flagged for a false start.

Hiring Ryan does not insure keeping Schottenheimer. In fact, it?s just the opposite, multiple league sources say.

If the Jets hire Ryan, the strong belief is that Schottenheimer will look to leave the Jets. Schottenheimer stayed with the Jets two seasons ago when he opted to turn down the Dolphins? head-coaching job. Now, two seasons later, it?s unlikely he would do the same if New York picked another candidate over him.

It?s a situation that already has drawn attention around the league. Other teams are eying Schottenheimer, waiting to see if the Jets go in a different direction and how they will handle it if they do. It would not be an easy situation to navigate.

But what is known for now is that Ryan and Schottenheimer are not on the same ticket like Obama and Biden. Contrary to public perception, it looks like it could be one or the other.

r Rex Ryan who says: "Mike is my right-hand man. Our backgrounds are very similar. My father is a legendary NFL coach and his father is a legendary football coach, who recently retired as the winningest HS football coach in Pennsylvania history. I know Mike will make a name for himself in this league. He's one of the best communicators I know, and he relates well with the players. He's smart, and he's dedicated."...Named defensive assistant in 2004...Spent 2 years working with the D-Line after a year as a coaching assistant/quality control specialist.
