Jets coach Rex Ryan not intimidated by rival New England Patriots http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...coach_rex_ryan_wont_stand_pat_for_rivals.html BY Rich Cimini DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, June 4th 2009, 4:00 AM Harbus for News Rex Ryan says his Jets are not afraid of division-rival Patriots. The Jets don't act like a team that choked last December. They sound like the Patriots - or what the Patriots would sound like if Bill Belichick allowed his players to speak their minds. And it starts with Rex Ryan, whose confidence, evident from Day 1, has permeated the locker room. "I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings," Ryan said Wednesday in an interview on WFAN. "I came here to win, let's put it that way.... I'm certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else." Unlike Eric Mangini, a Belichick disciple, Ryan doesn't mind if his players make bold statements. On Monday, safety Kerry Rhodes, via his Twitter account, predicted, "We will be the best defense in the league this year." Ryan said he concurred with Rhodes, adding, "I'm excited about that comment." Linebacker Calvin Pace, assessing the talent on defense, said: "I don't think you'll find a better team on paper." Ryan's attacking scheme, combined with key additions such as linebacker Bart Scott, cornerback Lito Sheppard and safety Jim Leonhard, has fostered a new attitude. The 2008 hangover is gone. "I think we're going to be a force," Scott said. Of course, tough talk in June never translates into wins in December. The Jets, of all teams, should know that. They're doing a lot of chirping for a team with an unsettled quarterback situation, but they're feeding off Ryan. Most coaches try to downplay expectations, but not Ryan. He's a chip off the ol' Buddy. His father never was afraid to rattle the status quo. "I'm not an under-sell guy," said Ryan, who will end his first offseason next week with a three-day minicamp. "Under-sell and over-produce? That's fine and dandy if we over-produce by winning the Super Bowl. But if we under-sell just to be average, I'm not here for the security of it. "I want to be special. I want a group of guys that does something that makes history. ... Look at these buildings. This facility that Woody (Johnson) put together wasn't to go .500. It's to win championships, multiple championships." You can bet those quotes will make the rounds in the Belichick bunker in Foxborough. PROUD PAPA: RB Leon Washington skipped practice, but it had nothing to do with his contract. His fianc?e gave birth to a boy, Noel, Leon spelled backwards. Washington returned to practice Monday after boycotting three weeks of voluntary workouts because of a contract dispute. ... RB Thomas Jones, who also wants a new contract, continued his media boycott. ...Rookie QB Mark Sanchez threw two would-be interceptions, both blatant drops by defensive backs, but he was encouraged by his performance, calling it his best off-season practice. ...LB David Harris, who required stitches in his mouth after a freakish collision last week, is sitting out.
JETS' OWNER, JOHNSON, LIKES RYAN'S ROAR By DAN TOMASINO http://www.nypost.com/seven/06042009/sports/jets/woody_likes_ryans_roar_172488.htm June 4, 2009 -- Jets owner Woody Johnson likes the brashness in his new head coach, Rex Ryan. Ryan already has predicted the Jets will win a Super Bowl in the next three years and yesterday on the radio declared, "I didn't come here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings." Ryan: Jets Are No 'Pat'sies SI Rankings: Giants 5th, Jets 15 This Decade Not exactly the kind of thing most rookie coaches would say. Johnson, who cut the ribbon last night at the grand opening of the Jets Shop in midtown, backed up his coach's abrasive words. "It's consistent with what Rex has been saying since he first arrived on campus," Johnson said. "He doesn't want to shoot low. He wants to shoot high. And I agree with him." Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins took it one step further, implying that Ryan's intensity is a welcome change from the Eric Mangini years. "How many guys get to play for a coach with that kind of fire and that much passion about how he does his job?" Jenkins asked. "This is the first time in a long time that it's not sugar-coated." Mangini, of course, was soft-spoken, never said a controversial word in his life and didn't seem to inspire his players during his three-year tenure. Ryan's straight-forward attitude and lofty goals have been embraced by the players, two of whom -- Kellen Clemens and rookie Mark Sanchez -- will be battling for the starting quarterback job. That will be the most scrutinized decision Ryan has to make during his first training camp at the helm. "Kellen and I came in together so I have a soft spot for him in my heart," said center Nick Mangold while signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans. "He's done a great job. If anyone has a leg up it's Kellen because he's been in the system, but it's going to be a good battle." However it turns out, Mangold seems sure Ryan's decision will be the right one. "As a player, you're excited to know he's going to do his best to make those [statements] come true," Mangold said. The Jets Shop, located on 50th Street between Madison and Park Avenues, stocks every Jets item imaginable, including BBQ utensils and Gang Green masks for the deranged fans out there. dtomasino@nypost.com
RYAN: JETS ARE NO 'PAT'SIES POST STAFF REPORT http://www.nypost.com/seven/06032009/sports/jets/ryan__jets_are_no_pat_sies_172410.htm June 3, 2009 -- With Tom Brady returning to the Patriots they are everybody's favorite to win the AFC East this season. Well, almost everybody. "I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings. I came to win, let's just put it that way," new Jets head coach Rex Ryan said on WFAN today. "I am certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else." Ryan was adamant his team wasn't playing second fiddle to the hated Patriots. "We already have sent a message to them, so you know they can read between the lines," Ryan said. When asked by host Mike Francesa what message had been sent Ryan said, "They can figure it out. When they come here the second week of the season, we'll see." Brady missed all but 11 minutes of the Patriots season last year before injuring his ACL and MCL and missing the rest of the year. The Patriots still finished 11-5 and second in the division to the Dolphins, but missed the playoffs. The Jets, after an 8-3 start, finished 9-7, which led to the firing of Eric Mangini. Brady, Randy Moss and company come to the Meadowlands in Week 2 for an early-season showdown. "Believe me, we are going to attack them, there's no question about that," Ryan said. "You know you gotta take it from them. I got confidence that we will give them everything that they want and maybe a little bit more,". Ryan, who was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore before getting the Jets head-coaching job, sounded confident throughout the interview and said his team is capable of having the best defense in the league. "I am not a guy that's going to say this guy is that," Ryan said. "Look Tom Brady is a hell of a quarterback, no question, I have a great deal respect for him, but I also have a great deal of confidence in the people we have in this building. If New England can beat us then they have one hell of a football team."
Jets' Ryan says he has no fear of Patriots http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/ny-spjets0412840624jun03,0,971602.story BY RODERICK BOONE roderick.boone@newsday.com 9:23 PM EDT, June 3, 2009 FLORHAM PARK, N.J. Rex Ryan is the polar opposite of his predecessor and it's clear he has no qualms about mixing it up. The Jets' first-year coach is a guy who likes to have fun and also speak his mind, essentially making him the anti- Eric Mangini. During his tenure with the Jets, Mangini, who's now the Browns' coach, kept everything close to the vest. He never said anything too controversial and sometimes acted as if being forthcoming about his players' injuries was against the law. However, Ryan has no problem expressing his feelings and he did just that in an afternoon interview Wednesday on WFAN, explaining that he's not afraid of Bill Belichick and the Patriots. "I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings," Ryan said. "I came to win, let's put it that way. So we'll see what happens. I'm certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else." Ryan's comments on the radio came after he had already met with the media following the conclusion of the Jets' offseason training activity session at the team's facility. But earlier, Ryan had tossed another jab at the franchise that's notoriously cloaked in secrecy. David Harris sat out practice Wednesday as a precautionary measure because of an injury, and Ryan was asked about the status of the injured linebacker. Harris accidentally was clobbered by safety Jim Leonhard during last Thursday's practice, opening a cut on his lip and loosening a few teeth. Leonhard was running full speed toward the sideline as he attempted to field an Eric Wilbur punt and his focus was on the ball the entire way. Harris was standing helmetless on the sideline and Leonhard crashed right into him, forcing Harris to get medical attention and miss the rest of practice. So as Ryan talked about Harris and how he needed some stitches to close the cut on his lip, he couldn't help but joke around in the same way that he's done since he arrived on the scene. "I don't know how many," Ryan said, referring to the number of stitches required to get Harris' cut under control. "We're keeping that from New England." Robbins' surgery microfracture. Giants DT Fred Robbins disclosed on his blog that the knee surgery he had after last season was microfracture surgery, a procedure with a longer recovery time than arthroscopic surgery. "We're taking our time with it, just making sure I'm at my best health for training camp," he wrote Tuesday. "I don't want to rush it and it's getting stronger and healthier each day." Robbins, a defensive captain last year, is 32 years old and entering the final year of his contract with the Giants. The Giants added depth at defensive tackle in the offseason with the acquisition of free agents Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty, perhaps with Robbins' uncertain status in mind. - TOM ROCK
Good post. It's so true that chemistry has a direct affect on play. If you feel like you are brothers in the trenches, you will get each other's backs and play with heart. Playing with heart gives a player the ability to play above their talent. This team has talent, so imagine what they can do if they played with heart?
So, if I were to go out there to get me an authentic #32 Mitchell & Ness Emerson Boozer jersey...I should be able to find it, right? If not, I'm gonna kick Dan Tomasino's ass.
While I can see your point it's not like he said we're gonna kick their ass every time we see them. He was just saying that this team isn't going to back down from New England just because it's New England. The attacking comment is saying offensive players are going to think twice about doing things because if they don't they may end up leaving on stretchers. I just hope the zebras don't take this as let's blow the whistle before Brady gets hit and throw a flag bs. Brady is going to get hit and he may end up wishing he stayed at home with Giselle. There is already a genuine dislike between Ryan and Belli and the message he is sending to the Pats is don't fuck with us because we will hurt you.
love how the papers are running with this pats hate. all of nyc needs to develop a strong hatred for these sleazebags
I think we have the hatred, we need to beat them more often. Every other year in Foxboro is ok, we haven't beaten them at home since Vinny's comeback on MNF in September 2000. Let's start there.
The hatred is there, it's always been but it's just more in the open now because of the *cough* Super Bowl *cough* wins and them owning us for the last decade. It's about time we had a coach who wasn't rah rah but more like "see that RB over there?" "go bring me his fucking helmet!!!" No more BBQ's for scrubs and marshmallows in your cocoa after a tough loss... you play well you get rewarded, you don't play well and you don't play. We don't need cheerleaders or geniuses we need football coaches and Rex is football coach. It's been in his mind since the day he was born. I just hope when things get tough he still is as open and candid. The rule with the media is keep giving them headlines and they'll be your friend. Start to get secretive and they'll destroy you.
hey Ryan gave the writers something to write about during the downtime of june before minicamp. they really do love him.
Going nuts over one player is risky, especially if he turns out to be a bust. But it's a risk I'd be more than happy to make again and again.
I have to agree. I know I'm not directly affected by it I live in Texas. It's beat like a dead horse on these boards on a daily basis. It reminds me of comparing everything to the the Nazis, it's heading in that direction. I think the team is excited and that is what every team does with a young star they parade him out.
uh, thread crated MONTHS ago... but thanx for playing. and FTR, The JETS are in the middle of raping their NY/NJ fans for PSL money, Your In TEXAS! You are going to hear about PSL for YEARS!
 lolz.... I think there are consolation Prizes though. See Jake in 214. He'll give you your prize......
