funny that in both mets runs they were home runs in which a previous pitch in the at bat went foul but had the distance to get out. 2-1 win, we're now 10 games above .500 again. fuckin awesome.
i apologize for commenting on the mets stirring 3 hit performance against the worst pitching staff in the league.
He's right, that was a semi-pathetic performance. To be shut down by Mike Maroth and let the catcher and pitcher pull off a double steal is just ridiculous and inexcusable.
Exactly.....a win is a win. I'll take anything I can get after those last 3 weeks. Maroth was pitching up to his potential tonight; something that he couldn't do on a consistent basis with the Tigers, thus why he's not in Detroit anymore. Yes, we had some mental errors, but wasn't it good to see the bullpen go out there and throw 5 shutout innings? On a side note, Cards fans are probably saying the same thing about how they couldn't execute against Sosa (who's been terrible lately) and the pen (who also has been very shaky since the losing started).
A little bit of trivia - Wagner moved into third place in career Ks for a lefty reliever with 977. He should pass Dan Plesac (990) this summer for second, but first is out of reach for a while (Jesse Orosco with 1169).
both orosco AND plesac pitched forever. Plesac pitched until he was 41 and a half. Wagner is a better strikeout guy than either one, I'd say, but I don't know if he'll have the longevity. Orosco has the career appearances record, interestingly, both plesac and orosco retired after the 2003 season.
Oh, no doubt with Wagner you have much more of a strikeout guy. I was just commenting on how damn long Orosco had a job in the league and that that's the rason why he's on top.
True. However, Orosco did close out a World Series as well as a NLCS. Wagner has yet to do that. Can he? Maybe....Probably. We won't know until he is given the chance, if he ever is.
I just dont understand why people think that if a pitcher sucks (Maroth) there is absolutely no chance that he could ever pitch a good game, and that its always a case of the Mets hitting poorly.
Orosco was a better strikout pitcher than most people remember (8.2 K's per 9 IP), but less than Plesac (8.7 K's per 9 IP), and neither was anything like Wagner (11.9 K's per 9 IP). All three (including Orosco, despite his two glove-tossing moments) were/have been pretty bad in the postseason (Plesac 1/3 IP, 2 ER; Orosco 21 2/3 IP, 4.15 ERA; Wagner 10 1/3 IP, 8.71 (!) ERA).
