David Morse plays a half man/half iguana and fights evil doers. Fred Savage plays his nemesis- Weasel Boy. Much more interesting than Mets baseball.
So making it to the NLCS last year (and creating a team capable of winning the World Series) doesn't give him any shelf life or good will? Really?
Yeah, Omar did a good job giving $119 mil to the statue that watches wainwright throw a strike for the K. Beltran is soft. Delgado trade was pointless, showing it even more now. Not a true cleanup hitter. Hitting like .220. Minaya gives Valentin and El Duque two year deals at their age. Then goes out an gives Glavine a $10 million. Could have used that $13 million this season on a top of the line pitcher instead of bringing back 40 year old junk balling soft tossers who can't beat an AL team. Minaya doesn't want to give a three year deal out to relievers unless he's the closer. So he lets Bradford walk to Baltimore for a 3-Year, $10.5 million contract. A month an a half later, he goes out and gives Scott Schoeneweis a 3-Year, $10.8 million deal. Nice job Omar, replace a guy with a 2.90 era in 70ip with a 4.88 era in 53.2 innings. Brings back Mota after coming off a season where he is caught with steroids. Much less gives him a two year contract.
Carrasco on radar? Always looking for bullpen help, the Mets are "monitoring" reliever Hector Carrasco, who was designated for assignment by the Angels yesterday. Carrasco, 37, had a 6.57 ERA in 29 games this season. A Mets official said the club is checking with scouts to see if he might be an option worth exploring. lmaooooooooooooooooooo
sure, he built an NLCS team last year, but they didn't make the WS, and this years team doesn't seem on course for it either, so I don't see how he could be applauded for building a team capable of winning a WS when they haven't and don't look like they are going to.
Minaya is far from the problem.. The Mets will be fine, they will be in the playoffs for the second straight year and will have as good a chance to go to the WS as any other team in the NL.
I agree with your last two points, but saying the Delgado trade was pointless and criticizing the Beltran signing were two of the dumber things I've read on this site. What exactly would you have done when Minaya took over? Would the Mets be where they are now, coming off of an NLCS appearence and leading the division by multiple games?
I would have left Cameron in centerfield and signed Magglio Ordonez to play RF instead of experimenting by moving a then two-time gold glove centerfielder to right field. That move right there would have saved roughly $35-$36 million which you could have used towards another pitcher. Pitching wins championships. Then Omar went out and re-signed above 40 year old pitchers to be top of the line pitchers. Glavine/El Duque are 3 and 4 starters at best.
Well, Magglio was coming off a mediocre year(and had 2 more mediocre ones before going nuts this season) and they really wouldn't have saved that much money by signing him. Even if you extend it out to the full 7 years Beltran's getting 11M more assuming Magglio's options are picked up. These are the terms of Magglio's deal: 05:$6M, 06:$15M, 07:$12M, 08:$15M, 09:$18M, 10:$15M club option ($3M buyout), 11:$15M club option (no buyout) and Beltran's: 05:$10M, 06:$12M, 07:$12M, 08:$18.5M, 09:$18.5M, 10:$18.5M, 11:$18.5M So through this season they'd have saved 1M if they signed Magglio to a similar deal and through 09 they would've saved 4M. I'm not sure where you came up with 35M. If Magglio's option's become vested(which they're almost sure to barring injury) He'll get 11M less then Beltran over the entire 7 years, with 5M coming from the difference in signing bonuses.
I meant total. Ordonez signed a 5 year/$75 mil contract. Beltran signed a 7/year $119 mil. It's an extra $41 million (including Ordonez buyout) they would have to spend during the time of what would be the length of Beltran's contract.
I edited the last part of my post but you probably didn't see it. Those last 2 years for Magglio become vested(at 18 and 15 per) if he starts 135 games or has 540 PA's in 09 or 270 starts or 1080 PA's in 08-09. He's already got 350 PA's this year and we're not even at the AS break. Unless he suffers some horrible injury in 09 these will become vested and then you're looking at 7/108 for the contract.
I would rather have, back then, Beltran than Ordonez. Furthermore, Minaya got us Maine for nothing and made great moves like Valentin last year.
