Tong wins his major league debut, first time in team history that two rookies have done that in a season. Mets score 19 runs, the most at home in team history. Hardly the artistic things of beauty McLean's games have been (no fault to Tong, giving up only one earned run), but the win is still nice.
Bats seem semi alive. If these 2 rookies can bolster the rotation...we might be due for a run like last year but we have to get hot soon as time is ticking still have faith
The pitching remains a disaster - all of the relievers obtained at the deadline are terrible, and the supposed workhorses of the rotation (Peterson, Manaea, Holmes, Senga) are putting up way too many bad starts. It's pretty ridiculous to think that two kids are going to anchor the staff in September, but that seems to be the only way they've got a chance.
Mets starters in August David Peterson: 6.68 ERA Kodai Senga: 5.86 ERA Sean Manaea: 7.13 ERA Clay Holmes: 4.32 ERA Nolan McLean: 0.89 ERA Jonah Tong: 1.80 ERA Bring up Sproat!
Sproat must be on the 40-man roster by 11:59 PM ET today to be eligible for the postseason. Tick-tock, Tick-tock!
Soto hits a two-out grand slam to put the Mets up three runs, and Manaea immediately gives almost all of it back. Just when you think these sucky starters can't get any worse, they surprise you.
Mets score four more runs (including a two-run triple for Soto), but Helsley comes in to get beat around. Even with a three-run lead, Mendoza has to come out and get him to try to avoid a complete meltdown. The hitting is there, but all of the other problems persist.
Gotta hope the scoring stays alive as the season winds down. Who needs pitching when we can put up 8+ a game lol. No realistic I know
Bringing in Helsley to start the bottom of the 7th when you're behind by a run, at this point of the season, is managerial malpractice. I've never been too impressed with Mendoza's managerial acumen, and that certainly didn't change my opinion.
*Call up Sproat *Move Holmes to the pen *Helsey should not pitch again unless we're up or down by 20.
Meanwhile, the Giants have won 10 of their last 11, and are only four games behind the Mets for the third wild card. Everyone has been talking about the Reds, but they've lost 10 of their last 13, and seem on the way down. Of course, they can get healthy again with a weekend series against the Mets.
