$20 Million a year for a guy to pitch an inning basically is kind of crazy! I don’t think this contract is gonna age well but I guess it had to be done?
If they don’t already hate Cohen, they are going to very soon. Lotta money for a closer but whatever. It ain’t mine and he’s the best in the game.
To be honest, I think $20 million a year for a top closer who makes 60 or 70 appearances makes more sense than $35 ot $40 million a year for a top starter who doesn't even reach 180 IP for the season. Starters seem more likely to get hurt these days as well.

Five years with his injury history is too risky. If he stays healthy it will suck, if not it’s unfortunate but not a bad thing.
I dont disagree with that.... it just sucks to feel like we lost the Seaver of our lifetime (I heard enough bitching from my dad about version 1.0)
He took advantage of complete desperation on the Rangers' part to have a decent pitcher to gain a contract for at least two years too many. Smart business on his part, but it only makes sense to me if he thinks that he only has a few bullets left in the arm. If he had confidence in his ability to stay healthy and effective, taking 3 years for $40+ M per year to play for a sure playoff team like the Mets, Dodgers, Padres, or Cardinals would make far more sense. I think he's figuring on/hoping for a Cy Young season in 2023 (greatly improving his HoF chances), a good, but injured, season in 2024, and then falling off a cliff, with the Rangers probably letting him go to a contender as a late-season addition in 2025 or 2026. I happen to think that that could very well be his ceiling, which is why the comparisons with Seaver are less apt than people think - Seaver had excellent years for the Reds in 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1981, and good years for the White Sox in 1984 and 1985.
