Nobody is critical enough of Minaya for leaving Jesus Flores off the 40 man roster last year and have Manny Acta and the Nationals pick him up as a catcher. They already have Brett Schneider. Trade Humber for Flores, and a prospect if you can.
Agreed, this guys was going to be the next catcher of this team and we had scrubs on our 40-man roster.
The Flores horse is out of the barn. Given that the Mets have no catching prospects coming up the pipeline any time soon it's probably worth giving Posada his years and money and hoping he'll be productive rather then signing trash for the next couple years and hoping for an OPS over .700
Pittsburgh has two that were alright last year and I think they have a good catcher prospect in AAA named Neil Walker. I have no idea if any of these guys are available. It's possible Pittsburgh may move one of them to another position. But at least I'm giving you an answer. I've had it with the old catchers. I've seen Gary Carter, Mike Piazza, and Paul Lo Duca fall apart. I don't like the idea of potentially seeing an ex-Yankee fall apart while getting a shitload of money from the Mets.
Paulino may be younger but his line was almost identical to Lo Duca's last year. Sure, the Mets could get burned in the last year or two of a potential Posada deal but at least there's an upside. With any of these other FA options you're going to be paying a little bit less money for terrible production.
I have no problem keeping the LoDuca/Castro combo one more year. However, I wouldnt mind either Pirates catcher for nothing.
The difference is that Paulino was projected to have a great season, he was coming off a breakout year and hit .600 in Spring Training. He got out of the gate slow on a terrible team and never recovered.
Projected by who? The difference between his season this year and last year is that a few of hits didn't fall in this season.
apparently Howard Johnson won't be back as hitting coach either.. Mets are waiting for Jamorrillo contract to expire hoping he will be hitting coach with Hojoi replacing Ricky as the first base coach again. Anyway thank god Ricky is gone.
El Duque had foot surgery today, but is expected to be ready for spring training. I don't like testing fate by penciling him in the rotation again...Then again, we don't have a ton of options.
I'm pissed I didn't see this earlier because what exactly did you shoot down? My point was the Mets don't have the prospects that the Yankees have even if we leave Joba and Hughes out of the equation.
