To me this is one of the rules that is almost constantly misapplied. They won't call a balk on a lefty when he's cheating trying to pick off a runner but if a guy makes a mis step while they're on the rubber they all jump out screaming balk like someone was just murdered. It's ridiculous.
Lots of rules in every sport don't make a whole lot of sense, but it's up to the players to know them. Every pitcher knows that you can't start your windup and then stop it when there is someone on base. To do it with a man on third in a 1-0 game is terrible, and I'm sure that Santana will say so after the game. Don't like bringing in Anderson here.
