Not only is it a terrible deal, but they could've kept Bradford for almost this exact price. It's a double WTF.
Omar is just building alot of DEPTH all around. The core of this team is Wright, Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, Wagner. Four potential everyday all-stars and a all-star "type" closer. He has outstanding depth in the outfield, and lots of starting pitchers just about to become very solid (Pelfrey, Humber, Perez, Maine) besides two dependable front-line starters (Glavine, Hernandez) and Martinez mid-season. AND the money to pick up a good starter mid-season if he feel he has a need for one.
we will lie and wait for some mid market team that can't afford its over paid starting pitcher or soon to be free agent and pounce on them. has anyone seen the class of 08 free agents?
We'll see if that happens and if the Mets are still in a position to contend when it does. Looking at it objectively this has been a disastrous offseason for the Mets. People forget that at the start of last season when the Mets got out to a big lead Pedro and Glavine were pitching lights out almost every time out and then they were just able to coast with a mostly trash rotation. Obviously this year there will be no Pedro and if Glavine struggles out of the gate it could get really ugly really fast.
the opening month the mets play 3 @ st.louis & 3 @ home against the rockies. then also 6 against phillies ,wash and atlanta splitting home and away. so the mets need to come out hot.
also here is a update on the fre agent market of 2008.some of these guys might have resigned already like Carpenter but others might be available @ the trade deadline. 2008 MLB Free Agents Let's take a look ahead to the free agency class after the 2007 season.* Of course, some of these guys will be signed before reaching free agency.* They're ranked by their 2006 WARP and their age for the 2008 season is in parentheses. 1. John Smoltz (41) 2. Michael Young (31) 3. Carlos Zambrano (27) 4. Joe Nathan (33) 5. Mariano Rivera (38) 6. Chris Carpenter (33) 7. Jorge Posada (36) 8. Curt Schilling (41) 9. Bobby Abreu (34) 10. Ivan Rodriguez (36) 19. Trevor Hoffman (40) 20. Freddy Garcia (32) 21. Kenny Rogers (43) 22. Torii Hunter (32) 23. Jason Isringhausen (35) 24. Omar Vizquel (41) 25. Marcus Giles (30) 26. The guys I bolded I doubt will hit the market. They will likely either retire, be extended by their current team, or traded and extended. Some already have.
