That's a much more likely scenario. I think this guy becomes the "lefty specialist" and Feliciano slides into the Darren Oliver role from last year.
I would think this guy would be the long man. He has started before. And heilman and Feliciano are both easily better.
Heilman being good against lefties doesn't even enter into the discussion. Wagner is good against lefties too maybe Schoenweis is coming for his job? Despite being a starter he's never pitched "long relief" like Feliciano did in 03 for the Mets. Feliciano's splits are also less extreme, you'd never want Schoenweis in there against a righty.
did we get zito yet?? btw we are not playing in the HOF game.the Blue jays are. they moved the May 20th game against the Yanks to 8pm.
So what your saying is, like Oliver, except for the playoff game. Feliciano, who as of now, is the best against lefties we have in the pen, will not face a lefty in a meaningful spot all year b/c he is the long man. It takes away our best weapon against lefties.
Wagner is the best against lefties in the Mets pen. I'd say Schoenweis and Feliciano are about even in that regard. Schoenweis is going to be the "get one lefty out and hit the showers" guy. Despite his low ERA Feliciano has struggled with IR's and last year allowed 12 of 39 to score.
Considering that he apparently based his decision also in part on the fact that Cliff Floyd would be a shaky fielder for the Mets, I think it's safe to say that he's not the sharpest tack in the box.
I'm just happy the Mets didn't get this guy. His numbers are terrible yet he always kills the Mets. After doing a quick check this apparently isn't just my imagination, although he may have been useful if the Mets only threw him in division games. Over the last 3 years he's got a 2.01 ERA in 54 innings against the Mets, 2.68 in 47 innings against the Nats, 2.47 in 44 innings against the Phillies and 2.66 in 47 innings against the Marlins. Sad to say for the Jays he's given up 19 runs in his 4 interleague starts over the same time period.
Mets are slackin' this off-season. They lost out on Matsuzaka, Ztio, and just today they lost out on Mark Mulder. I wonder who they will sign, other than Scott Schoeneweis.
Matsuzaka will bust. Zito signed a contract out of this world, glad they didn't even come near matching it. Mets weren't even one of the last 3 teams in the running for Mulder. Looks like Omar will go with what he's got and hope Oliver Perez returns to 2004 form. I am sure Omar will make a trade mid season for a starting pitcher.
I hate to question Omar, because he's done well with improving the bullpen since 2004, but Jesus Christ.
